Hellgate: London Preview for PC

Demons of Hell

Do the demons of hell have anything better to do than to harass the denizens of first person shooters? Of course not, that’s why game developers, Flagship, designed Hellgate: London, a story about hell opening its floodgates upon England.

First Person Shooters are almost a dime a dozen now-a-days, after all, it seems that anyone and their grandmother can make one. Still, FPS games are popping up about as often as Dakota Fanning movies, can we say slave labor? To stray from the pack, Flagship has implemented a cool new weapons system.

Since Hellgate is trying to set itself apart from those run-of-the-mill FPS games, you won’t be left with run-of-the-mill weapons. Flagship will be introducing a prefix/suffix system with the weapons. This means that you may find “a gun” and also “a gun of.” Confusing? Good, weapons in Hellgate have 5 different damage types, each with their own perks which are as follows…

Damage is the first damage type to be introduced, which has the ability to knock down opponents. Fire Damage will burn enemies causing damage over time (DoT). Have you run into an enemy with some pretty tough armor? You’ll have Spectral Damage to wear down said armor. Toxic Damage will, you guessed it, poison enemies which is also a DoT. Finally we have Electrical Damage which will shock your enemies.

Going back to the prefix/suffix system, you may find say, “a gun of burning” which will add a bonus to Fire Damage, which gives the game a retro Dungeons and Dragons feel. Get it now? Good, gold star for you. (BTW, send me an email saying that I owe you a gold star, and I’ll send you a gold star.) Flagship also threw out the figure, 100, when referring to weapons, meaning there will be over 100 different weapons to choose from. A beautiful aspect of combat in Hellgate is the ability to duel wield, so you can mix and match different weapon types, much like Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath.

Flagship doesn’t seem satisfied with the new weapons system being the only aspect of the game to set Hellgate: London apart from the rest, so they’ve violently ripped a page out of the book of Diablo. Diablo was one of the first games to feature random 2D dungeons. Hellgate will feature the first 3D engine to create random levels in the game.

London is not only sounding impressive, but its also looking impressive. And as we know, the more PC games that come out, the more powerful of a machine you’ll need to run the games. From the looks of it, you may need that powerful machine to run Hellgate, much like the one needed for Doom 3. Flagship hasn’t released any solid info about desired system specs, so this is all just speculation.

First person shooter fans beware; Flagship will be making their mark on the genre with Hellgate: London, hopefully soon.
