Super Mario Odyssey

Review

Amiibo bonuses

Scan the indicated amiibo while playing the game (not through Uncle amiibo) by holding D-pad Right and placing the amiibo on the Switch to unlock the corresponding bonus. This can be done at any time, usually with no time limits or restrictions.

Highlight purple coins on-screen (not on your map): Any Bowser amiibo.
    Life-up heart: Any Peach amiibo.
Random coins or bonus hearts: Any amiibo or amiibo card.
Temporary invincibility (30 seconds): Any Mario amiibo.

Completion unlockables

Successfully complete the game to unlock the following bonuses:

  • All kingdoms are expanded and have more moons to collect
  • Mushroom Kingdom unlocked
  • Can find and capture Yoshi
  • Wedding costumes can be purchased at Crazy Cap stores
  • New NPC challenges and collectible hunts

All kingdoms are expanded. There are more moons, new areas, new NPCs (with new moon reward missions), and generally more activities to complete. Obstacles that previously blocked Mario from exploring a zone are removed, allowing you to fully play kingdoms. Princess Peach will now be in all kingdoms. Find her to earn bonus moons. The Mushroom Kingdom is unlocked, which is a homage to Super Mario 64 , complete with rooms copied almost verbatim from that Nintendo classic. You can capture Yoshi on a rooftop in the Mushroom Kingdom. The previously locked Wedding costumes are available to purchase for a lot of gold coins. You can also unlock Wedding costumes for free with amiibo.

All regular moons unlockables

Collect all 880 regular moons by completely filling the moon lists to change the Odyssey’s sail to gold and unlock a new portrait of Bowser in the Wedding Hall. The Wedding Hall is located in the Moon Kingdom. The new portrait is located on the right as you enter, and allows you to fight Bowser again, but the battle will be much more difficult. Defeat Bowser to unlock a postcard. Since Super Mario Sunshine , postcards have been the normal reward for completing everything in the game.

100% completion unlockables

Successfully complete the following tasks to reach 100% completion:

  • Collect 999 power moons (including all moon lists filled)
  • Collect all captures/moves (including Action Guide filled)
  • Collect all costumes and hats
  • Collect all in-game music tracks
  • Collect all souvenirs

Reach 100% completion to unlock a star on your save file, and a top hat on Peach’s Castle, which includes a new cutscene (as shown in the video below).

Finding Yoshi

First, successfully complete the game to unlock Yoshi. Then, travel to the Mushroom Kingdom, and go around the left side of Peach’s castle. Find the scarecrow, and throw Cappy at it. A secret staircase will appear that makes the roof of the castle accessible. Get up the stairs before the timer runs out. Around the central tower on the roof, look for an egg with green spots. Break open the egg for Yoshi to appear. You cannot ride Yoshi, but you can capture Yoshi with Cappy for Mario to become Yoshi. You can eat apples to earn moons as Yoshi. There are also Yoshi related quests in the Mushroom Kingdom. From the central fountain, go upstream of the flowing water to find a cave. Grab the apple outside the tunnel, and travel inside to locate a large area for Yoshi to explore.

All costumes and hats

The following video shows all 42 costumes and hats in Super Mario Odyssey .

All secret warp locations

Search the indicted location in the listed kingdom to find the corresponding hidden painting warp zone. To reach special locations in certain kingdoms, Mario must use secret painting warp holes. There are ten total painting portals, and each one leads to a bonus power moon.

Cascade Kingdom: Dive into the water at the base of the waterfall near your ship and swim to find a hidden cave. Travel up and above the coins to find the painting warp zone. It warps you to Bowser’s Kingdom.

Sand Kingdom: Fast travel to the “Tostarena Ruins Sand Pillar” flag, then drop down onto the desert past the spinning coin sand hill. At the base of the stone tower nearby (near a Jaxi Stop) is the painting warp zone, on a ruined wall sticking out of the sand. It warps you to the Metro Kingdom.

Lake Kingdom: Take the stairs up to the left of the Odyssey ship starting point. There is a flag (Courtyard warp) with a small pool nearby. Dive in to find a painting warp zone at the bottom. It warps you to the Sand Kingdom.

Wooded Kingdom: Fast travel to the “Iron Mountain Path Station 8” flag, then drop down and look left. There is a fence with a gap (and a pole). Throw Cappy at the wooden statue at the end of the platforms. Complete the challenge, then travel behind the metal girder to reach a larger platform with a rock. Look behind it to find the painting warp zone. It warps you to the Luncheon Kingdom.

Metro Kingdom: From the Odyssey ship, simply drop down onto a platform directly behind it to find the painting warp zone.

Snow Kingdom: Return to the Snow Kingdom after completing the area, then capture the closest cloud with Cappy. With the cloud (available down the main path), travel left until you reach a large stone block on a cliff. Blow the block, cross the ice until it reaches a high platform on the other side, then use the block to reach a snowy platform with the painting warp zone. It warps you to the Cascade Kingdom. You also will need that block after exiting the cloud and returning to Mario’s normal form.

Seaside Kingdom: Defeat the kingdom boss, then return and jump into the water jets that launch Mario into the main fountain. Dive into the water in the fountain (outside the center) to find the painting warp zone at the bottom. It warps you to the Lake Kingdom.

Luncheon Kingdom: Fast travel to the “Path To The Meat Plateau” flag, and grab one of the floating bubbles with Cappy. Get across the platforms ahead, then turn right and reach the upper-right corner of the map to find a huge mushroom-shaped island. Get behind the platforms where the peppers are rolling down to find the painting warp zone. It warps you to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Bowser’s Kingdom: Defeat all four mini-bosses, then travel to the “Main Courtyard Entrance” flag. Go left from there, and then circle around the building below to find the painting warp zone. It warps you to the Moon Kingdom.

Mushroom Kingdom: Leave the Odyssey ship, then turn around. To your right is a hill surrounded by trees. The painting warp zone is on the ground, facing up.

All hidden Goombette locations

Search the indicated locations in the listed kingdom to find Goombette and get a power moon. She only appears in five kingdoms. Use captured Goombas to reach her. Bring her a Goomba to get a power moon.

Sand Kingdom

    1. Near the inverted pyramid arena, go back to the start of the zone and stack up the Goombas in sombreros. When you have four, go back across the quicksand using the floating platform. Jump up to the area ahead, then to the raised stone on your left. Reach the upper area above to reach Goombette.

    2. Return to the same area with the Goombas, and create another stack of four. From the Goomba territory, go right and follow the path around the structure. Turn left at the end, and proceed forward until you reach a cliff. Move left along the ledge until you reach Goombette.

Lake Kingdom

    3. Goombette is behind the Odyssey. Defeat the Broodal mini-boss to make steps appear to the left of the starting area. Then, go up those stairs and stack 10 Goombas —- take all of them down into the water to one of the mermaid platforms. Take the last remaining Goomba to Goombette to get a power moon.

Wooded Kingdom

    4. Defeat the Broodel mini-boss at the Sky Garden Tower, then return to the poisonous purple swamp. Capture a tank, and shoot the breakable wall along the metal. Enter the new area and activate the kettle bot —- plant the seed that spawns in a nearby pot and climb up to reach an area that is filled with Goombas. Stack all nine Goombas to reach Goombette on the nearby high platform.

Seaside Kingdom

    5. From the Odyssey starting spot, proceed left along the beach to find a bunch of Goombas with pirate hats. Capture five of them, and march them up the hill path between the cliffs; avoid the spike shells. You will find Goombette on a ridge to the left.

Luncheon Kingdom

    6. Goombette is visible near the Odyssey ship, on a high platform across the bubbling pink stuff. Go right from the Odyssey and stack four Goombas, then march back to Goombette’s location. Be careful since the path contains exploding tomatoes and rolling corn-cobs.

Mushroom Kingdom

    7. Go to Goomba Wood. Goombette is on a high platform across the moat. Before trying to reach Goombette, use Cappy to remove the four wooden stoppers to mostly drain the moat. Capture 10 Goombas after lowering the water level, then march them over to Goombette.

All Princess Peach locations

Search the indicted locations after completing the game to find Princess Peach and Tiara.

Easy gold coins

This farming method allows you to earn 72 gold coins per run. Travel to the Central Plaza in the Cap Kingdom, then go through the Cappy door past the green viewfinder. Capture a frog, swim right from the entrance, and look for a tiny indentation in the wall. Jump in it to find 72 coins. Then, simply exit and re-enter as many times as desired to get an unlimited number of gold coins.

This farming method allows you to earn up to 108 gold coins per run. Travel to the Top Of The Big Stump in the Cascade Kingdom, and proceed through the Cappy door. It is to the left of the stump, after jumping down to a platform on a hill. Go through the door and capture the T-Rex, then start stomping the hedgehogs that appear. If you smash them all, you will get 108 gold coins and a power moon (if you have not already completed the challenge). The power moon will not respawn, but the coins will. Simply leave the chamber and re-enter to reset it. Repeat this as many times as desired.

This farming method allows you to earn 62 gold coins per run. This method requires you to make a circuit around the indicated area. Warp to the “Rocky Mountain Summit” flag in the Lost Kingdom, and follow these steps:

    1. Collect 6 coins around the flag.

    2. Run through the plants around the palm tree for 8 coins.

    3. Collect the power moon (or missing power moon) on top of the palm tree for 5 coins.

    4. Drop down to the left of the Crazy Cap store, then drop down again to find another power moon. Collect it (or the empty vessel) for 5 more coins.

    5. Smash the nearby wall Mario for 10 coins.

    6. Go towards the button platform, and collect the 3 coins on the way there.

    7. Ground pound the large button, then collect 25 coins before the timer runs out.

You can collect 62 total coins if you follow that route. Exit the map and re-enter to reset the coins. Repeat this as many times as desired.

Gold balloons for Luigi

Reach Rank 50 (highest rank) in Luigi’s Balloon World to have Luigi’s balloons all turn gold.

Revealing things Cappy can capture

Leave Mario idle, and eventually little white hats will appear on anything Cappy can capture. This is very helpful for finding things you did not know Cappy can capture.

Canceling Cappy capture

If you throw Cappy at the wrong thing you want to capture, simply press ZL to immediately cancel the capture.

Secret hearts

In addition to being able to purchase hearts in the Crazy Cap stores, you can also find them in secret spots around the environment. Use Mario and Cappy’s spin move on red flowers with green stalks to get an extra heart. These flowers usually are in a circle, or a circular arrangement that makes them possible to hit with a spin attack. When you see a pink cat Mario on graffiti, throw Cappy at it to get hearts.

Reaching secret areas and moons

Wear the special costumes you can purchase from Crazy Cap stores in a specific kingdom to allow Mario to collect power moons and access certain locations you cannot normally reach in that kingdom.

Collecting power moons

Finding 250 and 500 power moons to unlock the bonus kingdoms is pretty difficult. You have to search all worlds, complete all puzzles, and do a lot of exploring to get that many moons. Return to a kingdom after defeating its boss, as a lot of new optional tasks will be unlocked. Additionally, make sure to smash the moon blocks. They are marked on your map in each kingdom —- they give approximately 20 moons per kingdom. You can also purchase packs of 10 moons for 1,000 coins from shops.

Finding power moons

Open the map, then press Y to display the “Lists” menu. You can view all the power moons you have found so far, where you found them, and a list showing all the available moons in the kingdom. Missing moon entries are numbered — so you will know how many you have not collected, and which big blank areas you probably should explore.

Easy power moons

Scan any non-Super Mario Odyssey amiibo after holding D-pad Left to send the amiibo out into the kingdom to find a power moon.

Talk to Talkatoo, who will appear after you defeat the major boss of a kingdom. He will give you a cryptic clue everytime to you to him to find a power moon.

Hint Toad appears after defeating the major boss of a kingdom. Pay him 50 gold coins to place a marker on your map showing you a power moon location.

Extra power moons from hidden NPCs

In addition to the regular moons you can collect, Mario can also complete quests for NPCs after completing the game to get moons. Even if you have not finished the story, there are still many characters that will give you moons just for finding and talking to them. Captain Toad is usually located in some hidden spot, while Goombette (the lady Goomba) will give you a moon for bringing stacks of goombas to her location. After completing the story, Princess Peach will appear in all kingdoms and reward Mario with a moon for finding her. She is easy to locate, and she will give you a clue for every spot she is in during each dialogue.

Advanced Cappy moves

All of Cappy’s best moves are motion control only. For example, one move is Homing Cappy (flick the Joy-Con to automatically home-in on the closest enemy, even if you missed your throw). There are also lots of other optional moves that are very useful, like tap Y for a longer Cappy throw, or roll Mario up in a Metroid-esque ball to gain extra momentum.

Chaining Cappy and Mario moves

Use motion controls to chain Mario’s jumps with Cappy’s abilities. This is useful for crossing large areas and traveling around the environment. Two combinations are perform a long Cappy throw, then a Dive jump; or throw Cappy, jump on Cappy, throw Cappy again, then Dive jump off Cappy. There are many combinations you can create. Mastering these techniques are not easy, but they are worth learning.

8-Bit Luigi Easter Egg

Go to the Sand Kingdom. If you have completed the story past the Sand Kingdom, the giant inverted pyramid will be floating in the sky in the far horizon. Look left to see a small pyramid platform in the distance. Travel left from the Sand Kingdom starting point and stomp the ground almost in the middle of the shadow. Keep trying until an 8-Bit Luigi appears from the ground. He will give you a lot of coins, and you can interact with him in a couple ways. Throw your hat and he will spin around and jump. Stomp on him again to make him yelp and fly up before floating back down to the ground.

Alternate level music

Jump on the globe at the Odyssey to start playing either the Jump Up Superstar song or the theme from Cascade Kingdom using a wind-up box. If you are in any kingdom from Cap Kingdom through Lost Kingdom, the globe will play the Cascade Kingdom theme. If you are in Metro Kingdom or further, the globe will play Jump Up Superstar.

Taking pictures

Pause the game and press D-pad Down to enter Photo mode. It is not specified, but Photo mode is accessible from the start of the game. Photo mode includes lots of filters, stickers, and options to take fun pictures of Mario. It is also fun to play around with all of Mario’s different kingdom-specific idle animations.

Pauline’s quiz answers

When you encounter Pauline in New Donk City Plaza, she will ask some random questions. After answering Pauline’s questions, she will send you on a quest to select the perfect present. To find it, travel to the Heliport flag, go to the iron girders, and drop to a platform. At the end is a pink handbag surrounded by coins. Grab it and return it to Pauline to get a power moon. The following are the answers to her questions:

Q: What do you think my hobby is?
    A: Going on walks.
