So, here's the problem: Windy X Windam simply is not a deep game. I had fun for the first match and grew tired of it by the fourth match. Most everything comes across as borrowed from other games that did it better, oftentimes by games that came nearly a decade before. I can honestly say that the most enjoyment I got was laughing at the goofy announcer girl's "Reaaaaady?? FIGHT!" introduction for each bout.
I cannot help but wonder what the developer and publisher were thinking when creating this game. There seems to be so many incremental improvements that could be made, such as a more fluid story, on the development side that have been inexplicably left out that it feels like this was nothing more than a rush job. And what is the nebulous anime this game is based upon and how well known is it? Even Pokémon, for all of its popularity, attempts to set a narrative within its games and familiarize those that may not know the brand as to what's going on. As for the publisher, the staggered release of the game from Japan to Europe to finally North American shores has taken the course of two years. How much return do they expect in the American market for a niche game with little replayability and narrative, not to mention hype?
In the end, however, that's not our problem. All you need to know is Windy X Windam is a subpar 2D fighting game that likely won't even appeal too much to the anime fan base. There is literally no reason I can think of that would make this game worth the money unless it were discounted quite severely, and even then I struggle with the idea of playing it for free. This is certainly not the worst game ever made, it's no Superman 64, but there is definitely nothing here worth your time.
