Shinji Mikami Returns Survival Horror To Its Roots
by Travis Huber

Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners, Joseph Oda and Julie "Kid" Kidman, rush to the scene of a gruesome mass murder, but what they find instead is a mysterious, powerful force lying in wait for them. After they watch the killing of several fellow police officers, Sebastian is attacked and is knocked unconscious. He wakes up in a land where monsters are wandering about. He will have to fight his way through a world of death and madness in order to figure out what’s truly happening. He will face his greatest fears in order to survive a journey where he will ultimately discover what lies in the shadows of the mysterious force that has transported him and his comrades to a horrific, damned place.

That’s the breakdown of what is promised to happen in The Evil Within. Now, without getting too much further into things, this game already looks awesome. It looks to me like someone has finally tapped into the very things that made survival horror games so popular and fun to play. I suppose that the genius of Shinji Mikami didn’t hurt any either. For those of you who don’t know who Shinji Mikami is, he is the one who created the Resident Evil franchise and inadvertently created the entire survival horror genre at the same time.

Having given what’s out there a good, long look it appears as though we are all going to get the absolute crap scared out of us, and I, for one, can’t wait. I was a huge fan of the early Resident Evil games and loved the way that there was nothing at all like them in video gaming at the time. However these days there are a ton of games that ride on the glory of those early titles and even dare themselves to be classified as survival horror, but with the exception of a very few, they all seem to fall short of the mind-wrenching horror that most of us experienced the first time playing Resident Evil.

Sadly, there isn’t much detail out about this game yet. Mikami and his team seem to be keeping a pretty tight wrap on information getting out to the masses, and that is fine with me. The less I know about the game itself, the better. Of course I want to know things like whether or not it will have online co-op modes or possibly even multiplayer, but as far as the story is concerned, I want to know as little as possible going into it. That way the first time something really freaking crazy happens, I will have no idea it’s coming and it will only add to the thrill.

It seems that thrills are going to be in tall order in this game. From the online trailers out there, it looks like it preys as much on the player’s mind as it tries to turn his stomach with the amount of over-the-top gore it presents. While games that rely on gore, like Splatterhouse, are a good time within themselves, The Evil Within looks like it draws from some of the most basic concepts of frightening films. Things like obscure camera angles and not always showing you what exactly you are running from and how far whatever it is may be behind you. Add to that great graphics and what hopes to be smooth gameplay and you have the recipe for one crazy good scare fest.

Let’s just hope that Mikami and his team are allowed to create the game that we have all been waiting for, because the last time I got a good scare out of a video game was the first Dead Space. So I am more than ready to get the S*** scared out of me by a great survival horror titles once more. Sadly, we will have to wait a bit longer to find out if the game will deliver on the promises. Will it be the new face of survival horror? Will Shinji Mikami strike gold once again? Or will this title fade into obscurity like Jericho, Condemned and so many others?
