Spiritfarer is a 2020 management game developed and published by Thunder Lotus Games. It was initially released on most of the major consoles such as PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, before making its way to mobile in 2022.
Despite being created by an independent developer, Spiritfarer fared well with critics. The game holds a score of 84 on Metacritic, and was widely praised for how it deftly handles the topic of death. As of 2021, the game had sold over 1 million copies, which by any metric is a huge hit for a game of this size.
Spiritfarer Premise
Spiritfarer isn’t your average management simulator. In this game, you play as Stella the Spiritfarer, whose job is to ferry the spirits of the dead to the Everdoor. This allows the spirits to finally make their way into the afterlife, leaving one plane for the next.
The main aim of the game is to interact with each of these spirits, making their journey to the afterlife as comfortable as possible by finding out and tending to their needs and desires. You can learn more about them, discovering their backstories through conversation. Crucially, the game moves at a slow pace, giving you all the time you need to interact with everyone. This is one of the reasons that Spiritfarer works so well – if you were rushed, it just wouldn’t feel the same.
The game isn’t all chat, though. It features some resource management elements, which affect how much you can build for your spirit companions. You can earn more resources by taking part in minigames, which can then be used to build even more rooms on your ferry. It’s a cycle that makes taking part in Spiritfarer feel rewarding.
Spiritfarer Main Characters
For the most part, the story isn’t really the focus of Spiritfarer. The game features many different Spirits, whom protagonist Stella must help accept their deaths by tending to their needs. Each one has different likes and dislikes, which you learn by interacting with each of them. Beyond this, you’ll also learn about their lives before death, giving the game its emotional heft.
Protagonist Stella is new to the job of Spiritfarer. However, with you in control of her actions, she can grow to become an expert in the position.

Spiritfarer Titles in the Series
As of right now, Spiritfarer is the only game in the series. Thunder Lotus Games have always been the one-and-done type, as it allows the studio to experiment with new ideas. We wouldn’t have gotten Spiritfarer without the studio moving beyond its previous releases, Jotun and Sundered.
With the developer’s next game being 33 Immortals, it doesn’t seem as though this pattern is going to change any time soon. We’d never rule a sequel out completely, but if we had to guess, Spiritfarer is going to remain the only game in the series for the foreseeable future.
