AMD / ATI Slated to Build Next Next-gen Xbox Chipset?

None

Late Tuesday, tech site Fudzilla reported that “industry sources” have confirmed that “AMD / ATI has already won the GPU deal for the next generation XboX console.”

This has fueled speculation that the next Xbox will likely be backwards compatible due to the fact ATI will be able to make a compatible chipset. As such, it’s proffered that the next Xbox will be a “re-freshening” of the platform rather than a full-fledged launch.

While all this seems to make a lot of sense and essentially walks previous rumors’ beaten paths, no official comment has been made by any of the relevant parties. Moreover, Microsoft has already gone through several compatible chipsets just to make their console less apt to fail. Perhaps a new chipset is simply cheaper to mass produce; one would suspect Microsoft would want to ramp up production of their console ahead of the release of Natal.
