Angry Birds Is More Popular Than Mario

Angry Birds Is More Popular Than Mario

None

I’m about to deliver a bit of disappointing news to the ever-shrinking sect of gamers still holding onto the hope that mobile phones won’t become a real threat to the gaming industry; angry birds just became more popular than Mario.

Yes, you read that correctly. Angry Birds, a title that was only released 2 years ago, has officially sold more copies than all the Mario Brothers titles, a franchise which just celebrated its 30th birthday.

Rovio, the company behind the birds-and-slingshots combination, announced today that 350 million copies of angry birds have been downloaded across all platforms. Compare this to the 262 million Mario-related sales that Nintendo was boasting about earlier this year.

Obviously, this news should be a bit concerning to Nintendo, a company that has become infamous for their unwavering anti-mobile phone policy. Executives have downright refused to license any historical titles, or develop anything new for iOS or Android platforms even though their investors are starting to squirm a bit.

The popularity of Angry Birds has spawned a series of copycats, including the upcoming Angry Boars title, which hit the App Store this week. Angry Boars bears almost no resemblance to Rovio’s hit franchise, but the titles have enough similarity that some players will undoubtedly purchase it by accident.
