This one is sort of a no-brainer, but when it comes to official comments, sometimes it’s good to get ahead of rumors before they spread. In this case, some murmuring was starting to build momentum about Fallout 76 possibly going free-to-play. This popped up at a time when everyone’s hungry for more controversy surrounding this game. Which is why Bethesda probably couldn’t just ignore this one.
The rumors started when some people in Australia noticed EB Games didn’t have any new copies of Fallout 76 ’s standard edition in stock. Stock appeared to be pre-owned copies only and unsold special editions. The rumor even began to suggest a recall, which led people to start believing Fallout 76 was headed toward free-to-play territory, not unlike The Elder Scrolls Online . (That is another Bethesda game, in case you are keeping track.)
Bethesda, via its Twitter account, simply replied “There is no truth to this rumor” when a curious fan asked about it. To further take away from the rumor’s credibility, I noticed myself that Amazon US seems to have replenished its stock of Fallout 76 sometime after some YouTube personalities were reporting on shortages. Maybe it was just that popular that a restock was needed.
