Released in 2019 for PC and 8th-generation consoles, Blasphemous is The Game Kitchen’s second title and the first in the Blasphemous series. The Game Kitchen would debut the game on Kickstarter in 2017, inspired by Team Cherry’s approach to funding and releasing fellow Metroidvania Hollow Knight. Not long after the game’s runaway success on Kickstarter, Blasphemous would secure Team17 as a publisher, helping to bring the game to a wider audience. Development would end up taking roughly two years, with the title officially launching on September 10, 2019, after its Kickstarter going live on May 23, 2017. Notably, Blasphemous‘ crowdfunding campaign would reach its goal in just one day.
Critical and fan reception to Blasphemous are mostly positive. While many players seem to hold the game in regard as being one of the best modern Metroidvania titles, critics were more metered in their response to the game. The title currently holds a respectable 77% review aggregate score from critics, while its Steam user score is a “Very Positive” 90%. The Game Kitchen would continue to support Blasphemous with free DLC up through 2021, at which point it would announce the game’s then-in-development sequel. While exact sales figures are unknown, The Game Kitchen announced that Blasphemous had reached 1 million players in March 2021.
Blasphemous Premise
The story of Blasphemous transports players into the realm of Cvustodia. Heavily inspired by the culture and history of Andalusian Spain, Cvustodia is a place ruled by an entity only known as “The Church”, with both it and its people worshipping a mysterious force known as “The Miracle”. Though the iconography and visuals are heavily influenced by Roman Catholicism and the history of the Catholic Church, the “Church” that is a governing force in Blasphemous is its own separate, fictional entity. In this realm, “The Miracle” that serves as the people’s object of worship is a force that twists and transforms the denizens of Cvustodia into horrific creatures enduring eternal torment, with the player taking the role of a former “Penitent One” who is tasked with destroying the Church and ending the cycle of horror perpetuated by its perversion of The Miracle.
In terms of its gameplay, Blasphemous is an action-platformer Metroidvania. The game’s map is split into several interconnecting biomes, each with its own enemies to fight, traversal challenges to overcome, and bosses to defeat. The main character, The Penitent One, will gradually unlock several different abilities and items that aid in both traversal and combat, including abilities that open up new areas and incentivize returning to previously visited regions. Combat is where Blasphemous differentiates itself from many other games in the genre, with attack animations and movement being much slower than many other Metroidvanias. As such, Blasphemous is known to be one of the flagship games in the “Soulsvania” subgenre; a nickname given to games that combine elements of Metroidvanias and FromSoftware’s Dark Souls trilogy.
Blasphemous Main Characters
The setting of Blasphemous is the land of Cvustodia, a fictional European country in which a seemingly miraculous force has inspired a culture of fervent religiousness and theocratic rule. The people of Cvustodia worship what we come to know as “The Miracle”, an apparently holy force that twists and curses Cuvstodia’s inhabitants, dooming them to eternal torment. According to the governing religion of Cvustodia, receiving the “Gift” of the Miracle and enduring these eternal torments is one of the quickest ways to salvation. Players take on the role of the Penitent One, a member of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow on a mission to end the suffering of Cvstodia by destroying the Church. Main characters in Blasphemous include:
- Penitent One: A member of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, the Penitent One is the last of his kind, resurrected by The Miracle to defeat the leader of the Church and reclaim the Cradle of Affliction.
- Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony: Crisanta is the commander of Escribar’s forces and a knight in service of the church. She is responsible for killing the Penitent One and is one of the final foes he must overcome before confronting Escribar.
- Esdras: A member of the Anointed Legion (the group of warriors under Escribar’s command for the Church), Esdras is a potential enemy or ally of the Penitent One depending on their actions. He can communicate with the ghost of his dead sister, Perpetva.
- Perpetva: Esdras’ sister, Perpetva holds the key to avoiding the fight with Esdras and the Penitent One counting on them both as allies.
- Escribar: Escribar is Blasphemous‘ main antagonist and the leader of Cvstodia’s Church. He has been reborn as the “Last Son of the Miracle”.
Games in the Blasphemous Series
The Game Kitchen’s Blasphemous is the first title in the series and only the second title from the developer, which previously cut its teeth on the narrative adventure game The Last Door. Blasphemous‘ release was highly anticipated following the launch and success of other indie Metroidvania titles (in particular, Hollow Knight), as it was shown to use many of the same elements such as blending classic Metroidvania platforming and exploration with a Soulslike approach to combat. A few years after the launch and success of Blasphemous, The Game Kitchen would follow up with a sequel, Blasphemous II. Games in the Blasphemous series include:
- Blasphemous (PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, 2019)
- Blasphemous II (PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, 2023)
Blasphemous Cheats & Secrets
While there are no official cheats for Blasphemous, there are several secrets to uncover and some powerful items players can equip to give them a fighting edge. In particular, careful selection of Rosary Beads (Blasphemous‘ version of equipable perks and abilities) can give players a major advantage against enemies. Blasphemous can be a tough game made toothless with the right Rosary Bead setups.
Unlockable Endings
At release, there were two endings players could unlock in Blasphemous. But with the addition of the Wounds of Eventide DLC, the total number of achievable endings in Blasphemous is now three. Players must complete specific in-game requirements to see each ending, with one ending standing out as Blasphemous‘ “true”, canon ending.
Ending A – The Path of the Believer
Prior to the Wounds of Eventide DLC, Ending A was considered Blasphemous‘ “good” ending, but it has since been replaced with Ending C as the game’s “true” ending. To achieve Ending A, players need to complete the following:
- Pick up the Immaculate Bead in the Graveyard of the Peaks. Players will find it in the room with the Confessor Statue.
- Equip the Immaculate Bead and die three times to transform it into the Weight of True Guilt.
- Equip the Weight of True Guilt and seek out all of the Confessor Statues across the map. Destroy each statue and enter the individual dungeons they open up.
- Inside each Confessor Statue dungeon, successfully survive the enemy waves.
- After destroying and clearing all the Confessor Statues, beat the final boss.
This will unlock the achievement/trophy The Path of the Believer.
Ending B – The Path of the Unworthy
Ending B is the standard ending that most players will earn when completing Blasphemous. It requires no special objectives other than simply making your way to the final boss and defeating it.
Beating the game this way will unlock the achievement/trophy The Path of the Unworthy.
Ending C – The True Ending
The Wounds of Eventide DLC makes the addition of a third “true” ending to the game that centers around players’ actions in relation to Esdras and Perpetva. This ending is special in that players can only unlock it if they visit Perpetva’s grave before fighting Esdras at the Bridge of Three Calvaries. Complete the following steps to unlock Blasphemous‘ true ending:
- Find and visit Perpetva’s grave in The Resting Place of the Sister (you will need to get there by traveling through the Echors of Salt area) before you fight Esdras of the Anointed Legion at the Bridge of the Three Calvaries.
- Take the incomplete Scapular given to you by Perpetva to the Bridge of the Three Calvaries. This will prevent you from needing to fight Esdras.
- Find Esdras in the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow using the Blood Perpetuated in Sand Relic to reach the room in the top left of the map.
- Take the Key Grown from Twisted Wood item to the Library of the Negated Words.
- Complete Diosdado’s quest (“Silencing the Voices”) and speak to him again in the Library of the Negated Words. He will open up a secret area.
- Fight Isidora, Voice of the Dead in the Ossuary (requires collecting roughly 50% of the Lost Bones).
- Return to the new area Disdado opens (Mourning and Havoc) and fight Sierpes.
- Play through the game as you would normally until you reach the fight with Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony. The fight will now have a new third phase to finish.
- After defeating Crisanta, complete the steps for Ending A (transforming the Immaculate Bead into the Weight of True Guilt and clearing all the Confessor Statues) before fighting the final boss.
This will unlock the game’s true canon ending, which the sequel will ultimately reference.
Blasphemous Cheat Engine Cheats (PC Only)
Like many other games, the PC version of Blasphemous is compatible with third-party cheat engines and cheat trainer files. Players will first need to download a cheat engine (Aurora or WeMod, for example) and then find and download a cheat trainer file to select various game mods. One such trainer file can be found here and contains the following cheats:
- Infinite Health
- Infinite Flasks
- Infinite Fervor
- No Skill Cooldown
- Max Rosary Bead Slots
- Set Damage Multiplier
- Set Tears of Atonement Multiplier
- Set Tears of Atonement
- Set Attack Speed Multiplier
Blasphemous’ “God Mode”
While the game does not have traditional cheats, players with specific Rosary Bead setups can break Blasphemous‘ systems using the in-game math against itself. This is not a cheat but instead an exploit, using the Rosary Beads to fully negate any incoming damage to effectively become invincible. To achieve “God Mode” in Blasphemous, players will need a very specific Rosary Bead setup. Note that the setup will utilize some adjustments whether fighting enemies who deal Physical or Magical damage (which the game does differentiate).
Physical Damage
- Dove Skull (10% Physical defense)
- Ember of the Holy Cremation (15% Physical defense)
- Frozen Olive (50% to Any damage type resistance when Health is below 20%)
- Light of the Lady of the Lamp (20.4% to Any damage type resistance when Bile flasks are empty)
- Silver Grape (20% Physical defense)
Using these 5 beads will give the player 114% damage reduction when their HP is below 20% and they have no more Bile flasks. But this still doesn’t account for enemies who deal non-Physical damage, which the following Rosary Beads will address:
Non-Physical/Magical Damage
- Amber Eye (35% Electricity defense, white-blue on hit)
- Consecrated Amethyst (35% Magic defense, violet/purple on hit)
- Quirce’s Scorched Bead (35% Fire defense, yellow/orange on hit)
- Wicker Knot (35% Poison defense, green on hit)
- Thorned Symbol (50% Touching defense)
Together, these Rosary Beads account for nearly every damage type in the game other than Physical. Along with the 5 Beads used for 114% Physical Defense, The Penitent One becomes essentially invincible during fights and will not take any damage. Players can also use the status necessary for “God Mode” to work (Health below 20% and no Bile flasks) to boost their damage using the following:
Damage Bonuses
- Heart of Saltpeter Blood (Mea Culpa Heart, grants roughly 80% increased damage)
- Crimson Heart of Miura (Rosary Bead, 50% bonus to Attack Speed)
- Token of Appreciation (15% damage bonus)
Using this setup, make sure to take damage before any boss battle. Entering battle with 20% health or less will trigger all the associated bonuses, resulting in The Penitent One being invincible. Note that there are 8 total slots for Rosary Beads, meaning players will need to prioritize their non-Physical damage reduction and damage bonuses along with the first 5 Rosary Beads for Physical Defense.
Rosary Bead Locations
Players can find all the above Rosary Beads necessary for the “God Mode” exploit at the following locations:
- Dove Skull: Albero
- Ember of the Holy Cremation: Graveyard of the Peaks
- Frozen Olive: Received from Gemino after completing “Where Olive Trees Wither” quest
- Light of the Lady of the Lamp: Mourning and Havoc
- Silver Grape: Desecrated Cistern
- Amber Eye: Library of the Negated Words (requires Three Gnarled Tongues and Blood Perpetuated in Sand to reach)
- Consecrated Amethyst: Mother of Mothers
- Quirce’s Scorched Bead: Wall of the Holy Prohibitions (pull the lever 5 times to open the gate)
- Wicker Knot: Buy for 4000 Tears of Atonement from Candelaria (Sleeping Canvases)
- Thorned Symbol: Patio of the Silent Steps (requires Three Gnarled Tongues to reach)
- Heart of Saltpeter Blood: Covenant of Our Lady of the Charred Visage

Blasphemous Cheat FAQs
Are there cheats in Blasphemous?
While there are no official “cheats” for Blasphemous, players who understand the game’s Rosary Bead system (which are essentially equipable perks) can utilize that knowledge to achieve some incredibly broken builds. One of these builds is outlined above, which is a sort of “God Mode” in which players will not take damage as long as they follow the build guide. That said, PC players do have the option of using a cheat engine and cheat trainer files for Blasphemous.
Can you miss things in Blasphemous?
The map of Cvstodia in Blasphemous is very large, with plenty of secrets lurking around every corner. Thankfully, no content in Blasphemous is technically missable, as players can always return to previously explored areas and use new abilities and improved combat prowess to breeze through formerly challenging sections of the map. This makes achieving the game’s fairly daunting 100% completion rate somewhat easier.
Does Blasphemous have a double jump?
The double jump is a signature ability of many Metroidvanias, making it somewhat of a staple in the genre. Blasphemous is unique among Metroidvanias in that it does not feature a double jump. In fact, the limitations placed on the player through The Penitent One’s slower and more deliberate movements make the game an interesting exercise in weighty and precise platforming. Even though Blasphemous does not feature a double jump, there are still several exciting new traversal abilities for players to uncover.
How long to beat Blasphemous?
As far as Metroidvanias go, Blasphemous strikes a nice balance with its length and depth. While some Metroidvania titles are 20 hours or more but struggle to keep the experience exciting the whole way through, Blasphemous is a tightly-tuned game with a roughly 12-14 hour runtime when focusing purely on the main quest. However, Blasphemous has some of the best and most rewarding side-content of any Metroidvania. To miss out on it would be tantamount to missing out on a large portion of the core experience. Finishing Blasphemous with 100% completion will take players roughly 30 hours, depending on skill level and the need to retry challenging boss fights.
