Can an Online Tournament be Patented?

Can an Online Tournament be Patented?

None

Walker Digital, parent to priceline.com, believes it has a patent infringement case against many video game developers that offer online tournaments. US Patent number 6,425,828 B2 was filed in 2002 and describes “a method and a system for a distributed electronic tournament system in which many remotely located players participate in a tournament through input/output devices connected to a central controller which manages the tournament.”

Currently, Walker Digital has a lawsuit targeted at Activision, Blizzard, and Zynga, stating that 24 games have infringed on this patent. These games include Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Mafia Wars, and Vampire Wars. Of course, it’s unlikely that Walker Digital will win this lawsuit, but if they do, this could have serious repercussions on the online gaming industry.
