Superhero MMORPG Champions Online is switching to a free-to-play model beginning January 25. There will be two separate levels of players: silver and gold. Free players are silver, and subscribing customers are gold. There will also be an in-game store – being dubbed the “C-store” – where players can purchase additional items. This is similar to what Turbine has done with Dungeons and Dragons Online and The Lord of the Rings Online. Since switching to a free-to-play model, both of these games have experienced vastly increased revenue streams. ![]() Is free-to-play the MMO business model of the future? Only time will tell. |
