E3 2016: VR Isn’t Mainstream Enough for Nintendo

E3 2016: VR Isn’t Mainstream Enough for Nintendo

A couple of weeks ago there was a hot rumor making the rounds that seemed to suggest that production on the NX had been delayed. One of the reasons given for the delay was Nintendo needing more time to integrate VR compatibility. That would be a huge deal if it were true, because Nintendo has been vocally reserved about the prospect of VR in the recent past. Recent remarks from Reggie Feils-Aime would suggest that nothing has changed.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg (via VG 24/7 ), Fils-Aime quipped that Nintendo had been “looking at the VR space since the days of the Virtual Boy.” Nintendo doesn’t think now is the time for VR; not yet. “With us, we want to make sure our next content is going to be mainstream, mass-market approachable, and when something like VR is at that point, you can expect Nintendo to be there.” It’s interesting to hear that Nintendo (of all companies) wants to make sure that its hardware is appealing to the mainstream. While they certainly stuck a chord with the Wii, the Wii U didn’t seem to appeal to anyone. It will be interesting to see the result of Nintendo’s newly-revived zeal for mass-market approachable technology with the reveal of the NX.
