Byte Barrel’s Forgive Me Father is the studio’s 2022 first-person shooter and the first game in the Forgive Me Father series. The title would begin its life in Early Access on PC before eventually reaching 1.0 release in April, 2022. Following the game’s PC launch, the title would become available on 8th-generation consoles and the Nintendo Switch. The success of Forgive Me Father would quickly pave the way for Byte Barrel to begin work on a sequel, Forgive Me Father 2, which would also enter Early Access in 2022 before launching in 1.0 in 2024. The title currently holds a “Very Positive” user rating on Steam and is commonly cited as one of the better games in the growing “Boomer Shooter” genre.
Forgive Me Father Premise
Like most Lovecraftian fiction, the story of Forgive Me Father begins decades before the actual events of the game, with several key individuals in the town of Pestisville coming together to sow the seeds for the awakening of a great and terrible being. This eventually leads to the formation of a cult, along with several other strange and tragic occurrences in and around the town. Investigating the history of the cult and their purpose is Pestisville resident Louis Martin, who after fearing for his life reaches out to a Priest and a Journalist for their help in exposing the inner workings of Pestisville. Regardless of which character responds to the letter, players soon find that all is not well in the town and that a strange and terrible event is just around the corner.
In terms of its gameplay, Forgive Me Father is a retro-inspired first-person shooter. The game is broken up into 5 Worlds, each of which is divided among multiple levels culminating in a climactic boss battle. Players have one of two characters to choose from, the Priest and the Journalist, each of which has their own unique abilities and a skill tree to advance. Defeating enemies and discovering secrets rewards experience points, which in turn results in characters leveling up and improving their abilities. Both the Priest and Journalist characters have access to the same general arsenal, though there are some weapons and abilities that are unique to each character. Similar to games like Doom and Quake, players will need to discover color-coded keys in each level to advance, and will occasionally come up on “monster closets” where they must survive waves of enemy attacks.
Forgive Me Father Main Characters
Players will begin Forgive Me Father by choosing between the game’s two main protagonists — The Priest and The Journalist. Players are given a little background info on each character, but the more important criteria are the differing abilities each hero has. While the Journalist is generally better at dealing with groups of enemies, she sacrifices a little bit of power to do so. Conversely, the Priest is better at one-on-one encounters and has higher defense and attack over the Journalist, but he is easily overwhelmed by groups of enemies. But, like most Lovecraftian stories, Forgive Me Father is ultimately a tale of two unlikely heroes butting up against cults, horribly mutated beings, and the elder gods of chaos themselves. Main characters in Forgive Me Father include:
- The Priest: One of two playable characters in Forgive Me Father. The Priest has connections to the town of Pestisville, which has been experiencing strange phenomena in the wake of a new cult rising to power.
- The Journalist: One of two playable characters in Forgive Me Father. Is cousin to Louis Martin, who has been investigating the strange cult in Pestisville.
- Cthulhu: The elder god deity from the works of H.P. Lovecraft and the main antagonist of Forgive Me Father. Cthulhu slumbers deep beneath the waves of the ocean, slowly driving humans mad until the day that he might awake and claim Earth as his own.
Other Noteworthy Boomer Shooters
One of the more exciting trends to occur in the first-person shooter genre over the last several years is the re-emergence of so-called “Boomer Shooters“. Taking their name from the sound of the iconic Shotgun from genre pioneer Doom, Boomer Shooters are modern FPS titles that adhere to both the visual aesthetic and gameplay mechanics of the classic games in the genre, borrowing heavily from the fast-paced twitch gameplay of titles like id Software’s Doom and Quake, as well as paying homage to many lesser-known cult favorites such as Blood, Hexen, and Rise of the Triad. Forgive Me Father is one of many Boomer Shooters to release in the last 5 years, though it stands out thanks to its Lovecraftian setting and cel-shaded comic book-style visuals. Other noteworthy Boomer Shooters include:
- Dusk (2018)
- Ion Fury (2019)
- Amid Evil (2019)
- Ultrakill (2020)
- Forgive Me Father (2022)
- Cultic (2022)

- HROT (2023)
- Sprawl (2023)
- Selaco (2024)
- Mullet Madjack (2024)
- Wrath: Aeon of Ruin (2024)

Does Forgive Me Father run on Steam Deck?
Notably, Forgive Me Father is not Steam Deck Verified. That said, the game will run decently well on Steam Deck, with few noticeable concessions to its performance. There are occasional frame drops, but otherwise, the game looks and runs great on Valve’s handheld. The one caveat is the Steam Deck’s battery life, which Forgive Me Father tends to drain quickly. Playing on the recommended settings usually results in players getting a paltry 1-2 hours of gameplay on a full charge. To extend battery life, go into the game’s settings (and the Steam Deck’s settings) and make some adjustments to frame rate and graphics quality.
Is Forgive Me Father a horror game?
While its mechanics place Forgive Me Father squarely into the retro-inspired “Boomer Shooter” subgenre of fast, twitch-based first-person shooters, the game’s story and atmosphere are definitively rooted in the horror genre. Specifically, Forgive Me Father is one of several games that utilize Lovecraftian mythos. The game’s final boss is none other than Cthulhu, and several enemy types call back to creatures from across the works of H.P. Lovecraft. So while it’s not a “survival horror” game in the traditional sense, Forgive Me Father is absolutely a horror FPS.
How long to beat Forgive Me Father?
As far as Boomer Shooters go, Forgive Me Father‘s length is fairly average. On average, most players will complete the main story in about 7-8 hours. That said, players who spend time searching through each level to uncover secret areas or obtain story items that shed more light on Forgive Me Father‘s cosmic horror tale can expect to spend double that amount of time in the game. Completionist playthroughs of Forgive Me Father typically take anywhere from 14-20 hours.
