Game Releases This Week — May 4, 2026 to May 8, 2026
In just the last few weeks, we've gotten several legitimate Game of the Year contenders one after another after another. April brought us the official console release of Hades II, Pragmata, Saros, Mouse: P.I. for Hire, and no less than a dozen other games that are all some of the best that 2026 has had to offer so far. So, with the first full week of May 2026 upon us, the question is, "How are the game releases looking for this week?" There may not be as many marquee AAA hits to look forward to over the next few days, but in their place are some incredibly cool-looking indie games that fall into some atypical genre territory, a couple of them even seeming like they may be contenders for the year's Best Indie Game category.
Dead as Disco
- Release Date — May 5, 2026
- Developer — Brain Jar Games
- Publisher — Brain Jar Games
- Genre — Beat 'em Up, Music/Rhythm
- Platforms — PC
Kicking things off this week (literally and figuratively) is Brain Jar Games' Dead as Disco, a music-enhanced beat 'em up/spectacle fighter that's equal parts Sifu, Viewtiful Joe, and Hi-Fi Rush. Like all three of those games, Dead as Disco has an incredibly cool and unique sense of style in terms of its visual identity and soundtrack, but it's that audio accompaniment that comes into play during the game's encounter design, with in-rhythm attacks giving players a significant advantage over foes in this musical brawler. Having played the demo for Dead as Disco previously and walking away impressed, we're excited to see how the full game stacks up.
Handmancers
- Release Date — May 5, 2026
- Developer — 58Blades
- Publisher — 58Blades, Human Qube Games
- Genre — Deckbuilding, Roguelike
- Platforms — PC
Ridiculous naming aside, Handmancers is one of this week's more exciting releases if you happen to be a fan of great roguelike deckbuilders. Even in a world where Slay the Spire II exists (and just keeps getting better and better during its Early Access window), Handmancers is still a worthwhile pick-up for anyone who's into the genre, as it's doing something incredibly fresh compared to most other contemporaries in a very crowded space. Along with its deckbuilding gameplay, Handmancers is a rock-paper-scissors roguelike, with the cards that players collect correlating to different variations on one of the oldest hand-to-hand challenges. Based on early preview coverage, Handmancers is one that fans of roguelike deckbuilders will not want to miss.
Motorslice
- Release Date — May 5, 2026
- Developer — Regular Studio
- Publisher — Top Hat Studios
- Genre — Action-Adventure
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
Another interesting-looking indie that drops early this week is Motorslice, which is an aptly named slice-of-life walking simulator/adventure game set in an atmospheric, almost liminal post-apocalyptic wasteland littered with larger-than-life structures and machines. Like many of the other games arriving this week for PC, there's a public demo available for Motorslice on Steam that gives players plenty to chew on when it comes to seeing what the game is all about and how smooth its traversal and combat feel. Players who enjoyed games like Sable but might be looking for a little bit more direction in their gameplay will probably find that Motorslice occupies a strong middle ground.
Wax Heads
- Release Date — May 5, 2026
- Developer — Patattie Games
- Publisher — Curve Games
- Genre — Simulation, Puzzle
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S
Closing out the cavalcade of indie game releases on Tuesday is Wax Heads, which is an excellent slice-of-life simulation game where you get to step into the shoes of a local record shop employee and get to know your customers, all while attempting to save the shop from a corporate buyout, a la Empire Records. In terms of actual gameplay, Wax Heads incorporates fun little mini-puzzles that players have to solve when interacting with customers, noting their genre preferences, favorite songs and artists, or even using vague clues like melodies and song lyrics to locate and sell them their next new album. A quirky little indie puzzle game for all the audiophiles out there.
Alabaster Dawn
- Release Date — May 7, 2026
- Developer — Radical Fish Games
- Publisher — Radical Fish Games
- Genre — Action RPG
- Platforms — PC (Early Access)
Anyone who's played Radical Fish Games' CrossCode knows that it's one of the better modern indies to effectively replicate the best action-adventure and action RPG games from the 16 and 32-bit eras, and the developer is back at it again with Alabaster Dawn. Ahead of its Early Access launch on PC this week, Alabaster Dawn had a lengthy demo that players could check out as part of the February Steam Next Fest this year, which only proved further that the game would be both a worthy successor to CrossCode and one of the year's most promising action RPGs. Anyone who grew up playing classics like Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger and who enjoyed newer retro-inspired RPGs like Sea of Stars or Chained Echoes should absolutely be picking up Alabaster Dawn when it launches this week.
Eko and the Bewitched Realms
- Release Date — May 7, 2026
- Developer — Twin Studios
- Publisher — Twin Studios
- Genre — Action RPG, Roguelike
- Platforms — PC
Other than Moonlighter, there really aren't all that many games that attempt to take the classic top-down action-adventure gameplay of The Legend of Zelda and merge it with roguelike structure and progression, which is what makes Eko and the Bewitched Lands such an exciting proposition. Eko is an action roguelike spin on the Zelda formula featuring an incredibly cool cel-shaded visual style and unique art direction that promises plenty of great combat and puzzles as players attempt to — what else? — save a princess from an all-encompassing evil threatening the existence of the very world. If they can pull off that mix, the prospect of an endlessly replayable Zelda could be too good to pass up.
Huntdown: Overtime
- Release Date — May 7, 2026
- Developer — Easy Trigger Games
- Publisher — Coffee Stain Publishing
- Genre — Action Roguelike, Run 'n Gun
- Platforms — PC (Early Access)
Speaking of very cool-looking roguelikes, this week also sees developer Easy Trigger Games following up their excellent 2019 run 'n gun Huntdown with a roguelike spin-off, Huntdown: Overtime. Like the main Huntdown, Overtime is a side-scrolling run 'n gun with some cover shooting elements and plenty of 80s-inspired sci-fi violence, but it's the roguelike twist that makes things really interesting. Instead of having to stick with one specific approach or playstyle in the various gang-infested streets you venture out into, players can tailor their cybernetic upgrades to specific playstyles and then use that to guide the modifiers and within-run buffs they pick up along the way. Honestly, if it's anything close to how great the main Huntdown was, this will be an essential roguelike for the library.
Kill it With Fire 2
- Release Date — May 7, 2026
- Developer — Casey Donnellan Games
- Publisher — tinyBuild
- Genre — FPS
- Platforms — Nintendo Switch
After previously releasing last year for PC and other consoles, Switch owners are finally getting their hands on the bug-killing FPS Kill It With Fire 2 this week. The Switch version looks to have some pretty close parity with the releases on PC and other consoles, meaning it should end up being an absolute blast for anyone looking to exterminate hordes of horrific bugs with their friends. Kill It With Fire 2 is fine enough in solo play, but it transforms into something even more enjoyable in co-op.
Mixtape
- Release Date — May 7, 2026
- Developer — Beethoven & Dinosaur
- Publisher — Annapurna Interactive
- Genre — Adventure
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S
Annapurna Interactive is known for publishing titles with gripping narratives, and it continues that trend this week with Mixtape. A coming-of-age tale set at some point during the 1990s, Mixtape collects the memories of a group of friends who are reminiscing about the time they spent growing up together on the night before they all leave their hometown to go their separate ways, and it's all set to some of the more iconic music of the 1980s and early 1990s, including The Cure, Joy Division, The Smashing Pumpkins, and more. Anyone who counts themselves as part of Gen X or is an elder Millennial will probably find plenty of heartstring-pulling nostalgia with Mixtape from both its soundtrack and its premise.
Stolen Realm: Survivors
- Release Date — May 7, 2026
- Developer — Burst2Flame Games
- Publisher — Burst2Flame Games
- Genre — Action Roguelike, Bullet Hell
- Platforms — PC
Co-op turn-based tactics game Stolen Realm only just released last year, and it's already getting an excellent-looking Survivors-like spin-off with Stolen Realm: Survivors this week. Just like the name implies, Stolen Realm: Survivors is a horde survival action roguelike featuring the characters and classes from Stolen Realm, letting players loose against hordes of different enemy types in a variety of environments as they build up their power and fight to survive until the clock runs down. Like the main Stolen Realm, Stolen Realm: Survivors features an incredibly cool low-poly visual style and dark fantasy aesthetic that make each of its preview screenshots jump out at you. If the game plays half as good as it looks, we'll be in for a treat.
Wardrum
- Release Date — May 7, 2026
- Developer — Mopeful Games
- Publisher — Team17
- Genre — Turn-Based Tactics, Music/Rhythm, Roguelike
- Platforms — PC
Closing things out this week is one of my personal most anticipated indie games since playing it during the February Steam Next Fest, Wardrum. Coming to players from new studio Mopeful Games and renowned indie publisher Team17, Wardrum answers the question of "What if we mixed Guitar Hero with Fire Emblem", and somehow nails it better than that strange genre brew would have been in my imagination. It's a solid turn-based tactics roguelike at its core, but aligning attacks and abilities to rhythmic button presses in time with the excellent, drum-heavy soundtrack gives each offensive maneuver an extra little push that grants significant advantages in battle. Each class is great to play as, progression feels immediately rewarding, and the visual style looks pulled straight out of the classic Fire Emblem games.
