GameStop CEO Expects Only One New Console In 2013

With the Wii U confirmed to be coming later this year (and a possible date for it unveiled at the GameStop managers’ conference), eyes are turning to the future of the two other console developers, Sony and Microsoft. GameStop CEO Paul Raines may have some insight on this.

“We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013,” said Raines. “We’re expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in ’14. These rumors change every week, but we’re hearing more about next year.”

This fits with speculation from industry analyst Michael Pachter, who says that, while both companies are expected to have a new console out by the end of 2013, he believes that Microsoft could end up delaying their Xbox 360 successor until the spring of 2014. He cites a desire to “accommodate overwhelming demand from hardcore gamers” as his reasoning behind the expected delay.
