Hajime Tabata Promises Final Fantasy XV is Coming This Year

Have you ever been so eager to please someone that you ended making promises too big for you to actually keep? I think some of us are worried that Square Enix is doing just that. Think about everything that is supposed to happen between now and 2017: Final Fantasy XV, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and the Final Fantasy VII remake are all on the horizon. That’s an enormous workload, not taking into account the various handheld games and PC/mobile ports on the way. Perhaps no game has been on the receiving end of our cynicism more than Final Fantasy XV, due to its nearly decade-long development.

The game’s director, Hajime Tabata, posted a very optimistic New Year promise on the Square Enix blog. In his post he promises, “We will finally release FFXV this year, in 2016! In development, previous phases required wisdom and strength. However, moving forward the final phase will focus on effort and willpower.” Holy crap, that sounds intense. I’m picturing a building of developers chugging x-potions and ethers, power-coding through the night and leveling up their stats: “Power-napping +1.” Tabata-san is promising the moon to fans, and I have to say, his optimism and zeal are contagious. “I vow to you all that every member in the team will do their best to the very last possible moment taking responsibility and pride in their craft. We will do everything we can to finish FFXV to create an experience we are incredibly proud of and one that you will enjoy and treasure.” I don’t know about you guys, but I’m starting to get pumped. We were promised additional details in March, so hopefully in a couple of months we’ll have an official release date.
