Now that Marvel’s Avengers was announced at E3 2019, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have been offering a steady stream of information via the game’s official Twitter account. A three part series offered insights into what people can expect from the game. While it won’t be an open world game, it will have a campaign that can be played alone offline.
The open world part was addressed first. Since the Avengers have such a worldwide scope, working across the globe, having the team isolated in one city didn’t fit the vision for Marvel’s Avengers. Instead, there will be specific areas for people to take the team and visit, with a hub to visit. Also, more environments will later be added for free.
As for the campaign, it will be played alone. It will also not have an always-online requirement. But, when people play Marvel’s Avengers with other people, each person will have to be a unique character. (You won’t be able to have a group where everyone is Thor, for example.) The characters will have different costumes to choose from and each one will have a skill tree. Also, more characters will be added for free.
Crystal Dynamics also confirmed it is listening to people who want to play Marvel’s Avengers and will consider feedback. However, during an IGN interview, Lead Creative Director Shaun Escayg said that the character designs will likely not change. (Some people didn’t care for the looks of certain revealed characters. Escayg said, “There are currently no plans to change our character designs.” However, the E3 2019 footage was from a pre-alpha build, so it is likely the Avengers will look different when the game launches.
Marvel’s Avengers will come to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on May 15, 2020.
