We’ve been pestering Miyamoto for years now about a new Pikmin game. The series is one of the most popular niche IPs for Nintendo, and Pikmin 3 proved early on that Nintendo is capable of producing engaging Wii U games with gorgeous HD visuals. With every Direct we’ve been waiting for the announcement of Pikmin 4 . After all, Miyamoto stated that it was in the works. Only, we didn’t expect to hear about it in a 3DS Direct.
But there you have it. The next Pikmin game will be on the 3DS, and it’s a side-scrolling platformer. This is going to leave many of you feeling pretty disappointed, but let’s try to stay open-minded. The game does look very interesting, and many of the series-defining mechanics are intact. We’ll miss freely exploring an expansive HD world in three dimensions, but who knows: Nintendo could knock it out of the park and produce the next fan favorite! Look forward to seeing the new Pikmin some time in 2017.
