Nintendo Launching New Hardware in Emerging Markets

Nintendo Launching New Hardware in Emerging Markets

For a while now, a rumor has been circulating that Nintendo will be showing off a new piece of hardware at E3. However, that new piece of hardware may not be for us.

Instead, Nintendo has revealed that it is making a brand new console and new games for markets outside Japan and the U.S. The new console and games will be aimed at lower-income consumers in developing countries. This is because very few people in developing markets would be able to afford a next get piece of hardware at the price that they are selling for now.

“It would be difficult to enter those markets if we didn’t create something new… For the mass market you need to provide something that most of the middle class can afford,” Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said.

An example of the markets that this could be applicable for is the Chinese market which has recently lifted its console ban. “We think the Chinese market has a lot of potential, but I don’t think the lifting of the ban has solved all of the difficulties in entering it,” Iwata said. “We need to study it more.”
