Sean Murray and the team at Hello Games are hard at work on all kinds of patches and fixes for both versions of No Man’s Sky . Eventually, though. they’ll get to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor. The game has sold better than we expected it to, even with all of the hype. It’s become a record-breaking smash hit on Steam, and one of the best-selling new IPs for Sony as well.
On the PS4, No Man’s Sky shot straight to the top of UK charts. It’s weird to see an indie game sitting in the number one spot with GTA V and Overwatch below. No Man’s Sky marked the second largest launch for PS4 behind Uncharted 4 , and it’s Sony’s biggest new IP launch. When new IPs from all publishers are taken into account, No Man’s Sky ranks fifth behind Destiny, Watch Dogs, The Getaway, and The Last of Us . I’d say Hello Games is in pretty good company.
No Man’s Sky has been tearing it up on Steam, too. This has been the most popular launch game on Steam so far in 2016. Valve reported 212,620 people playing simultaneously on launch day, which is bananas. That beats out concurrent player records for much bigger games like Dark Souls III, Rocket League, The Witcher 3 , and XCOM 2 . As the game continues to get patched to perfection and word of mouth spreads to the few who hadn’t heard about it already, we expect these numbers to continue to climb.
