Notch Steps Down From Minecraft

Notch Steps Down From Minecraft

None

Minecraft is out. It’s hit version 1.0 and, with that, has officially been released as a full, no-longer-in-beta project. For those who’d been following along since the alpha, it was a poignant and energizing moment, punctuated by the first ever “Minecon.” Its release, though, has also wrought something else.

Markus “Notch” Persson is passing down his designer hat, placing it on the head of fellow designer Jens Bergensten. Rather, he has passed it down, as he noted in a post on his blog, today, that the decision was effective yesterday, December 1.

What will Notch do with the burden of Minecraft design lifted from his shoulders? “Personally,” he writes, “I will now rest for a while, then get back to work refreshed and eager. I’ll be helping out with Minecraft, of course, but also starting work on some new project.”

As the head of Mojang, and the creative impetus behind its debut success, it falls to Notch to come up with the company’s next focus. Surely we can allow the man a short rest in the interim, no?
