When it comes to things like frame rates in games, people might know that a higher number is better, but not exactly understand the hows or whys. To help understand the science behind it and explain, NVIDIA has been conducting a series of studies to show why FPS matters and walk people through them. The most recent one is a bit more competitive, as it shows why higher frame rates are a bigger deal for esports. Basically, smoother animations, fewer distractions, and better accuracy are all benefits of higher frame rates.
This is broken down by sections. To start, a GPU determines the frame rates, while the display determines the Hz. These are two different things. FPS is how fast your system is running, while the Hz is when your monitor is showing them. You need a GPU capable of high FPS and a quality display to ensure the two work well and avoid distracting elements like tearing. At lower FPS/Hz rates, it might be more difficult to track characters’ movements, you might see distracting after effects when things move, and tearing could distort images.
Even more important is how latency factors into it. the FPS/Hz you are playing at detertimes when you do and see things happen on-screen. If you have a lower rate, say 30 or 60 FPS/Hz, then it takes longer for things to render and appear. While the difference between 240 FPS/Hz and 144 FPS/Hz might seem more minor, latency makes a big difference between 240 FPS/Hz and can greatly impact accuracy. NVIDIA’s study even looked at FPS and kill/death ratios in Fortnite and PUBG. It noted that players had a 20% better K/D ratio at 80 FPS, did 59% better at 120 FPS, and were 90% better at 180 FPS.
