The Macquarie group is a global financial services and investment banking group. Thanks to its recent elevated rating for Nintendo’s financial performance, Nintendo’s stock price shot up over 9 percent. In light of the fiscal afterglow, Macquarie senior analyst David Gibson wrote a report that caught the attention of Wall Street Journal tech reporter Takashi Mochizuki, who said the following on Twitter:
“Very interesting report by @gibbogame: Nintendo’s NX may work with smartphones, PCs and even rival consoles such as PlayStation 4.”
Well by now I think we all knew that Nintendo would be integrating its near-future console and smartphone experiences, if nothing else through its Nintendo Account. But now we seem to have an interesting bit of corroboration for a hint from back in August that Square Enix might port over Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn to the NX. FFXIV ‘s director and producer Naoki Yoshida stated at Gamescom 2015 that he was waiting to hear when the NX would be released, and whether Nintendo’s online policies would allow for cross-platform gameplay. Perhaps this latest financial report is an insider’s hint of things to come. We already know Dragon Quest will show up on the NX. Why not Final Fantasy? It’s possible that by the next holiday season PS4, PC, and NX players will all be playing A Realm Reborn together, and that’s an exciting prospect.
