Piracy Not to Blame for Nintendo’s Poor Software Sales

None

Blaming lower-than-expected software sales on piracy seems to be the excuse du-jour for many game companies, but in a refreshing twist, Nintendo boss, Satoru Iwata has stated that he has the opposite view. “I do not think we should attribute bad software sales solely to piracy,” Iwata said in a statement. “Even with piracy, as long as we can create products which can attract attention from many consumers and which can greatly entertain them, that software can make it to the number one position of the hit software sales chart.” Although piracy has never been a large problem on the Wii, the presence of the R4 cartridge has unfortunately made piracy on the Nintendo DS handheld common, and major retailers in both Japan and the US have been known to sell this piracy device, despite crackdowns from Nintendo. Still, despite all these setbacks, it’s nice to know that Nintendo still sees sales figures as representations of their products’ quality, instead of just large numbers that could have been larger if it wasn’t for software pirating.
