My wife is very humble and down to earth, but she can have expensive taste. She doesn’t always want a new pair of flats, but when she does, she wants a pair of Tory Burch flats. You ever see them at the department store? They look identical to the $15 flats beside them – plain, black, thin – only with a Tory Burch buckle on the top, which is apparently enough to merit a $150 price tag. You can slap that logo on any plain, ugly thing and suddenly it becomes desirable and pricey; it really blows my mind. The same is true with Pokemon . Anything with the Pokemon name attached to it seems to demand a premium, and tends to make a lot of money. Can you imagine how huge a big budget, live-action Pokemon movie could become?
Well, The Pokemon Company has been meeting with multiple Hollywood studios to make that dream a reality, and it’s resulted in bidding war. Apparently Legendary Entertainment (think Jurassic World, Warcraft, and The Dark Knight) , Warner Bros. ( The Lego Movie, Harry Potter, etc.) , and Sony ( The Amazing Spider-Man, District 9, etc.) are all trying to get in on this, but The Hollywood Reporter says (via Kotaku ) that Legendary may come out on top. This would be an interesting turn of events, as Legendary Entertainment is owned by China’s Dalian Wanda Group, and China and Japan have a bit of historical tension between them. Until only a few years ago Japanese movies were banned in China, and now Legendary could be working to produce a movie based on the most popular animated series to come out of Japan. Stranger things have happened, though, and I think I speak for all Pokemon fans when I say I don’t care who funds and produces this movie as long as they take their time and do it right.
