While we expected a 2016 release of Sony’s upgraded PS4 system, codenamed “Neo,” we’ve been growing increasingly skeptical. We’re already about half-way through August and we haven’t even had an official reveal yet, so how soon could we expect Neo to go on sale? PlayStation VR will get an obvious head start in October, but having Neo on shelves by November or December could bode well for holiday sales if they market aggressively and offer a trade-in program.
According to a recent rumor, that could still be the case. French gaming site Gameblog has reported that its sources indicate a September 7 reveal for the PlayStation Neo. We figured that we’d get the announcement during the Tokyo Game Show, and the post does acknowledge that TGS would make sense, but affirms that their sources are convinced that Neo will be revealed first during an event in New York a week prior.
Gameblog’s sources also mention a September 12 reveal for Nintendo’s NX which, if true, would mean that we could see both consoles in action during TGS. These are exciting times indeed. Keep in mind that even if Neo is revealed on September 7, it still could be some time before the hardware actually shows up on store shelves. I’m still betting on a holiday 2016 release, but we have about a month before we know for sure (apparently).
