Road Systems Stopped Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo

Road Systems Stopped Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo

Back in the day, let’s say the early 2000’s, there were hints at a foreign Grand Theft Auto game. TechRadar has come through with information from a “source” that says such a game almost happened. Back in 2003, Rockstar Games filed trademarks for Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo, Grand Theft Auto: Bogota, and Grand Theft Auto: Sin City.

Of the three, it turns out Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo was the most likely. Rockstar supposedly even sent staff to Japan for research purposes. Allegedly, the progress fell through due to a number of factors. The road system was one. (Like in Britain, people in Japan drive on the left side of the road.) Another factor happened to be the sorts of cars and brands that would have to be altered when the location changed.

It’s a shame this name never came about. A Grand Theft Auto game set outside of the United States would be really amazing. Imagine a game taking place in Asia or Europe. Though really, there are tons of great locations around the world, and you know Rockstar could do some amazing things.

TechRadar’s source also says Grand Theft Auto 6 work has begun and, while there’s no definite location yet, it sounds like it’ll be inspired by a US location again.
