Squirtle Evolution Guide: Stats, Moves, Type, And Location

Squirtle (National Pokédex entry #0007) is one of the most recognizable Pokémon in the franchise. First appearing in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, Squirtle is one of the original starter Pokémon. To this day, this adorable Pokémon has remained a fan favorite alongside the other original starters, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and, of course, Pikachu. Most Pokémon Generations have the choice of a water, fire, or grass-type Pokémon. Squirtle is the original water-type starter.

Thanks to Squirtle’s cute, friendly turtle-like appearance, this Pokémon has always been a popular choice. Squirtle has a lot of versatility as well. Being a water Pokémon, Squirtle is effective when facing off against fire, ground, and rock-type enemies. It doesn’t have many true weaknesses either. Only electric and grass-type Pokémon will deal increased damage to Squirtle. As experienced trainers will know, these Pokémon types are some of the hardest-hitting and most durable. Choosing a water-type Pokémon is a pretty safe bet, especially at the beginning of any Pokémon game.

Squirtle has two evolutions that make it an even stronger choice. At level 16, Squirtle will hit its first evolution, Wartortle (National Pokédex entry #0008). At level 36, Wartortle will evolve one more time to achieve its final evolution, Blastoise (National Pokédex entry #0009). Thankfully, Squirtle’s evolution line doesn’t require any special items or conditions to evolve. Simply playing with Squirtle and leveling it up will guarantee both evolutions, making this cute starter an incredible source of hydropower.

As one of the original starters, Squirtle has made appearances in just about every Pokémon game out there. The highly successful Pokémon anime featured Squirtle as one of Ash Ketchum’s main Pokémon companions. Although Squirtle hasn’t achieved the fame of the franchise’s mascot, Pikachu, it’s not far behind. Squirtle’s a popular pick and for good reason.

As a popular starter pick in older Pokémon games, most trainers are familiar with this adorable turtle. Although Squirtle and the other original starters have long since been replaced with the newer generation’s starters, Squirtle is still a popular choice. Sadly, this water type isn’t available in the newest Pokémon games, Pokémon Violet and Pokémon Scarlet, but it can still be found in many current Pokémon games. The newest games that feature Squirtle are Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. Squirtle can also be obtained in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

Squirtle is classified as a “tiny turtle Pokémon” because it is small and almost perfectly resembles a turtle. With a giant turtle shell on its back, Squirtle is a blue, round Pokémon that stands bipedal on its two back feet. Most Squirtles are male, with only about 13% of the species being female. As a base, Squirtle possesses the Torrent ability. It also has the hidden ability, Rain Dish. Squirtle’s base stats equal 314 when tallied.

By looking at an overview of Squirtle’s base stats, it doesn’t seem like that impressive of a Pokémon. That’s because Squirtle will only be useful in low-level portions of any Pokémon game. In order for Squirtle to become more powerful, the trainer will need to evolve it. That said, Squirtle is capable of learning many moves from leveling up, breeding conditions, and Technical Machines (TMs). For the purpose of this guide, we’ll be taking a look at everything Squirtle (and its evolutions) can do in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. Since these are the most recent games that feature the Squirtle evolution line, it makes the most sense to use them as a reference.

Squirtle’s Moves Learned Through Breeding AKA Egg Moves (Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl)

It’s important to keep in mind that since these moves are specific to the way the Squirtle is bred, these moves will be the same for the entire evolution line. Wartortle and Blastoise’s Egg Moves will be identical to this list.

Wartortle’s Stats and How to Evolve Them

A Squirtle evolving into Wartortle

©Mr. Pokédex / The Pokémon Company

Wartortle is slightly larger than Squirtle. In this second evolution, Wartortle is no longer considered small, so it’s been upgraded to a “Turtle Pokémon.” Wartortle still resembles Squirtle enough to make the connection that they’re of the same evolution line. Although larger and slightly darker in color, Wartortle still sports the same basic body shape and stance. Wartortle develops fangs, claws on its hands, and large winged ears, making it look more menacing than Squirtle. Wartortle’s evolution screams that this Pokémon is battle-hardened and prepared for more.

Wartortle still has the same abilities that Squirtle possesses, Torrent and Rain Dish, but he receives a significant upgrade to his base stats upon evolution. Where Squirle’s stats add up to 314, Wartortle’s shoot up to 405, giving this evolution a jump of almost 100. In order for trainers to evolve their Squirtle, they will need to play with Squirtle enough to reach level 16, where it will evolve into Wartortle upon level up.

Blastoise’s Stats and How to Evolve Them

Wartortle evolving into Blastoise

©Mr. Pokédex / The Pokémon Company

Blastoise is the final evolution in the Squirtle evolution line. Out of the three Pokémon, Blastoise is the largest. The average Squirtle weighs about 20 lbs. Wartortle is significantly larger, weighing in at about 50 lbs. Blastoise makes the most drastic change in size. After evolution, the average Blastoise will weigh around 190 lbs and stand at about 5 feet tall. Blastoise is considered a “Shellfish Pokémon” and like the other two, it has the Torrent ability and the Rain Dish hidden ability.

Blastoise gets a major bump to its base stats upon evolution. Where Wartortle clocks in at a total of 405, Blastoise totals 530, making Blastoise a clear heavy hitter. In addition to its growth in size, Blastoise also gains larger claws on both its hands and its feet. Blastoise also has two massive canons sprout out of its shell, which are typically used for powerful water jet attacks. For any trainer looking for a powerful water-type Pokémon that can take hits and deal high damage, Blastoise is an absolute must. In order to obtain Blastoise, trainers will need to evolve Squirtle into Wartortle and then continue playing with Wartortle. Once Wartortle hits level 36, it will evolve into Blastoise.
