System Shock 3 is Officially in the Works

System Shock was a big deal back in the ’90s. The plot was modern, the pacing and FPS elements were ahead of their time, and the soundtrack was a real head-bobber. System Shock 2 was just as widely acclaimed as the original if not more so, and ever since its release fans have been wondering when we might see a new System Shock on modern consoles and PCs. Well, today we were supposed to be shocked (I know, I know) by Otherside Entertainment’s announcement that System Shock 3 is in the works. There was a fancy, mysterious clock ticking down and everything, but if you’ve been reading the headlines you’ll know that the game’s official website accidentally went live before the countdown reveal concluded.

What’s done is done, though, and now it’s official! We did get a bunch of new details about the game today, so it was still an exciting announcement. A lot of developers, voice actors, and characters that made past games so memorable will be returning, and there is even gossip about the possibility of virtual reality playing into the game somehow. When you sign up for updates about the game you’re required to complete a short survey that asks how enthusiastic you’d be about a VR System Shock game. Foreshadowing, maybe?
