The Army Wants Your Games

The Army Wants Your Games

None

When you sign up for military service in Canada, you probably expect plenty of combat supplies to come your way. Standard-issue weaponry, fatigues, and boots are all things that would probably grace a Canadian supply list. But video games? Probably not. Still, the latest government tender set forth by the Canadian Military lists several games that need to be procured by the tender’s closing date of December 2.

So what are the games going out to the men and women of the Canadian military? For the most part, there seems to be a large amount of M-rated fare requested, including both Modern Warfare titles, Assassin’s Creed II, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Gears of War (which has the distinction of being the most-requested game on the list, with ninety-three units listed as the supply needed). In addition to violent shooters, there were also several music games on the list including Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock, Rock Band 2, and The Beatles Rock Band. In total, the Canadian Army is requesting 500 games.

So what is the Canadian Army planning to do with all these games? Well, no official purpose is listed on the tender, but it can be assumed that they will be used to provide some much-needed downtime to the troops. However, Canadian Capt. Sandra Bourne was quoted as saying that the order did seem “a little strange.”
