Expansive Worlds’ 2017 release theHunter: Call of the Wild is the third entry in the long-running theHunter series, most recently published by Avalanche Studios. The game is considered the most realistic depiction of wild hunting ever, sending you worldwide to different hunting reserves. Players can experience the game on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, with it remaining popular on all platforms.
theHunter: Call of the Wild Premise
In theHunter: Call of the Wild, the core gameplay involves the hunting of 82 different animals in a variety of hunting reserves across the world. The game prides itself on realism, meaning you’ll have to consider everything from scents carried by the wind, animal behavior, weather patterns, day and night cycles, and more!
It offers a huge selection of weapons, ammo, and equipment to choose from. To have any overall success in the game, you need to match your loadout with your prey. This adds layers of complexity to the gameplay, and significantly increases the learning curve.
Once you’ve hunted your prey, you can take prizes from each and display them in your Trophy Lodge, showing off your greatest achievements. You can show these off to friends in the game’s multiplayer mode, where you can hunt with up to eight players.
With new hunting reserves continuing to be added, you’ll never be short of new locations to hunt, too.
theHunter: Call of the Wild Main Characters
Unfortunately, theHunter: Call of the Wild has no story to speak of – gameplay is the focus here. This means that the only actual character in the game is The Hunter, who is your playable avatar throughout. You can customize The Hunter to your own liking, meaning their appearance or gender isn’t pre-determined.
Throughout the game, The Hunter never speaks, and the nature of the game means we generally never get to see them express any part of their personality. Essentially, they’re a blank slate, so players looking for heavy character development won’t find it here.
The Vurhonga Savanna DLC gave some insight into The Hunter’s family, although very little of value is revealed.
theHunter: Call of the Wild Titles in the Series
As a franchise, theHunter has been around since 2009. The first two games in the series, theHunter: Classic and theHunter: Primal, were not as popular as the most recent game. Although theHunter: Call of the Wild was released six years ago now, the game retains its popularity, with a variety of DLC packs managing to keep the game interesting for players.
It remains to be seen exactly when we’ll see a new iteration of theHunter, but given the series’ recent success, it would be surprising if one wasn’t forthcoming.
- theHunter: Classic (2009)
- theHunter: Primal (2015)
- theHunter: Call of the Wild (2017)
