Top 7 Video Game Cons (Everyone Should Visit)

Top 7 Video Game Cons (Everyone Should Visit)

Every year, people might start thing about unplugging from their consoles, leaving the house, getting outside, and going to a major convention center where they can play games in a bigger space with even more people. Kicks up every spring and runs through the fall. But, where should gamers consider going? Well, there are seven possible cons they should attend.

E3

E3

E3 is an exciting place for breaking news. If you’re a member of the industry, like a developer or journalist, it can be a great way to make connections, discover news, and test games. But, for ordinary people, it isn’t one of the best gaming cons out there. The lines are ridiculously long. If you want to play a Nintendo game, it could be over three hours. Lots of companies are dropping out. It’s neat to say you went to E3, but perhaps not the best con for your gaming fun. But, it happens every June if you do want to go.

Comic-Con

Comic-Con

There are a lot of comic cons out there, from the Wizard World Comic-Cons you can find around the U.S., to the big ones. Those two big ones are the ones we’re talking about here. The San Diego Comic-Con is held in the second half of July in San Diego, while the New York Comic Con is always in the beginning of October. Each one has a broad focus that covers all things geeky, but you can usually find lots of fun video or board game activities too!

QuakeCon

QuakeCon

With QuakeCon, we’re getting into the more dedicated cons. This is specifically for people who like ZeniMax games from companies like id Software. You get to see developers, learn how your favorite games were made, test certain games ahead of launch, get swag, and participate in competitions. Given id Software’s games, this is mainly an event for people who enjoy first-person shooters. Like in 2019, DOOM Eternal will be a big focus of the July 2019 event in Dallas, Texas.

BlizzCon

BlizzCon

Like QuakeCon, BlizzCon is fairly specialized. This is the show for people who love Blizzard Entertainment games. If Diablo, Hearthstone, Overwatch, StarCraft, and World of Warcraft are your games of choice, this is the place to go to make friends, play games, get competitive, and collect exclusive swag that you can use inside of those games. There’s even always some sort of musical performance! Since 2014, it’s been held in November in Anaheim, California.

Midwest Gaming Classic

Midwest Gaming Classic

Here’s the event that is 100% about all video games in general. This is where people have gotten to see the Nintendo PlayStation prototype. Here is where you’ll get to test out brand new pinball cabinets. Galloping Ghost Arcade brings some of its rarest games for people to play. Plus, it’ll probably be one of the only events where you might be able to find and buy a N64 DD. It’s typically held in April in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Tokyo Game Show

Tokyo Game Show

The Tokyo Game Show is a spectacle. It is a foundation. The array of games covered may make people envious. Some might consider it going to the motherland, due to the hobby’s roots in Japan. Getting to go would be a wonderful, once in a lifetime sort of experience. People who are truly dedicated should consider attending someday. (Especially since you could also do some great shopping in the area!) It is held every September in Tokyo.

Penny Arcade Expo

Penny Arcade Expo

While the Penny Arcade Expo might not always be the “best” gaming convention bet for some people, it is a fantastic option due to its range. There are video game and board game-focused PAX cons to attend. People could go to PAX West in Seattle, Washington, PAX East in Boston, Massachusetts, PAX Australia in Melbourne, PAX South in San Antonio, Texas, or PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They happen throughout the year. Each one is an opportunity to play, compete, learn, and socialize. Because there are so many and it is centered on games, it is one of the best cons to attend.
