Twitch’s Halloween Loot Boxes are Insane

Twitch’s Halloween Loot Boxes are Insane

Twitch doesn’t seem to understand that there’s a bit of a controversy revolving around loot boxes at the moment. The reason I say this, is because they currently have released a loot box that makes the worst microtransactions in video games look like child’s play. The current Twitch Halloween crate features emotes for Twitch users to collect, but only for a limited time.

That’s right, emotes from the Halloween crates will not be permanent. To make matters worse, Twitch is employing a “gotta collect ’em all” type scheme. If you can collect all six of the emotes, you’ll then get a single permanent one called “Zombie Lord Kappa.” As Twitch users are already aware, you get a crate by “cheering” on a Twitch stream. It’s essentially a donation to the streamer in question.

To get a crate, you have to cheer with at least 250 bits, the equivalent of $3.50. A single emote is awarded for each crate, but it’s not guaranteed to be one of the Halloween ones you need for the permanent emote. Twitch does give users the option to buy the Zombie Lord Kappa emote on its own so they don’t have to go through loot box after loot box in search of it, but the cost of said permanent Halloween emote is 5,000 bits, or around $70, without any discounts.

The whole situation might be funny if it were facetious, but Twitch is very seriously running this promotion. I don’t know about all of you, but I definitely won’t be participating.
