Unreal Engine 4 In Time For Next Gen?

Unreal Engine 4 In Time For Next Gen?

None

Trust me when I say this: The Unreal Engine 3 has been used to power a giant chunk of your favorite games. The newly minted Batman: Arkham City, the upcoming BioShock Infinite, Gears of War 3, and dozens more were (and are being) built in the Unreal Engine. It’s perhaps the most versatile engine in gaming.

So, you can understand my excitement when Mike Capps over at Epic Games started tossing the phrase “Unreal Engine 4” in a recent interview.

“I want Unreal Engine 4 to be ready far earlier than UE3 was; not a year after the consoles are released,” he said. “I think a year from a console’s launch is perfectly fine for releasing a game, but not for releasing new tech. We need to be there day one or very early. That’s my primary focus.”

Epic wowed the gaming community when it pulled the curtain back on the “Samaritan” demo earlier this year. “It was just that no one knew what a next-generation game would look like—so that was our idea, to show people what we can achieve,” Capps said. “We believe what we’ve demonstrated is achievable at a reasonable development cost, so it’s what gamers should be demanding for next generation.”

The Unreal Engine 4 has supposedly been in development since 2003. With the recent buzz surrounding next gen systems, here’s hoping that Capps’ engine is ready when they drop.
