Big video game companies love to put out elaborate April Fool’s jokes, which are often quite funny and occasionally just mean . Some, like the Japanese beer ad above, just add insult to injury. But there’s plenty of fun to be had in the fans of indie developers and fans, as well. Let’s take a look at some of the more obscure and odd gaming-related amusements that popped up for April Fools Day this year. As they haven’t been vetted by big corporations, be warned that some of these links may contain material that is not safe for work.
For starters, we all know that Sonic’s animal friends are what all fans enjoy most about his games, right? Leave the Blue Blur entirely behind in Big’s Big Fishing Adventure , a fan-made “tribute” to the Sonic community. If you’re more of a Nintendo person, perhaps you’d prefer Ace Attorney: Hyrule Lawyers ? Or if it’s Western games only for you, try out Worms: Dating Revolution .
Some companies even stick AFD Easter Eggs into their games. Final Fantasy Record Keeper introduced a new relic, the sword Excalipoor . A friend of mine leveled it up to 20 for the laughs and it still only does 1 damage. League of Legends has done… something . I don’t play LoL , but that sure looks like a thing they’ve done there, and I’m pretty sure some of it is in the actual game. Guild Wars 2 hosts one of the most elaborate April Fools Day setups, with an entire in-game retro platformer called Super Adventure Box, and it’s back this year .
Finally, while this isn’t strictly AFD-related, today’s only the second day that North America has had access to Miitomo , Nintendo’s new social smartphone app. That means that everybody’s busy making horrible and/or hilarious Miiphoto pictures. Take a look at the latest right here , though be extra-warned that they haven’t been vetted in any way. In an unusual move, Nintendo appears to have decided not to strictly moderate Miitomo posts and pictures. Seems like a good way to celebrate the day!
