Zynga Offered Even More Money For PopCap

None

Yesterday, it was confirmed that PopCap, the makers of Plants Vs. Zombies and Bejeweled, would be joining the EA publishing juggernaut for $750 million. Depending on PopCap’s performance over the next couple years, the deal could actually net them more money, somewhere around $1.3 billion. That’s a lot of money.

Apparently, EA isn’t the only company that’s shown interest in the casual game maker. Zynga, the creator of a myriad of Facebook games, including the runaway hit Farmville, offered to purchase the company for a whopping $1 billion before the EA deal. This news comes from Forbes, who got word from a trusted inside source.

The likely reason for PopCap turning down Zynga and going with EA for less money is the chance that their deal with EA has the potential to be worth more money (the aforementioned $1.3 billion). Had Zynga and PopCap joined forces, they could’ve unleashed a perfect storm of casual game dominance, the likes of which the world has never before seen. But EA’s a good choice too.
