Happy Valentine's Day, fellow gamers! To celebrate, here are some picks for great kickass couples in the world of video games. They aren't all romances; some of them are bromances or simply partnerships, but all these pairs have a strong bond with each other while both being able to kick some major boo-tay. Read on, then share your own favorite gaming pairs in the comments.
This bratty prince and his completely unservile servant bring the laughs throughout the original Disgaea game. Laharl is the spoiled son of a powerful demon lord who must fight to regain control of his kingdom after his father's assassination. Spear-wielding demoness Etna supports Laharl's campaign for her own reasons, and their quest is full of snappy one-liners, over-the-top special attack animations, and exploding prinnies. Bringing humor to the traditionally sober tactical RPG genre, these two paved the way for the very successful Disgaea franchise, and remain the most beloved characters in the series.
In The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, players finally experienced a truly strong personal connection between the hero Link and the titular Zelda. While Zelda has often been a distant character in the series, she's Link's dearest friend and budding romantic interest in this game. Rather than needing to be rescued, Zelda does her own part to save the world throughout the game. Reuniting the two characters is a powerful incentive that pushes the story onward, and the player can feel Link's anguish and determination every time more obstacles are placed between him and his beloved Zelda. We can only hope that future entries in the series continue this kind of close relationship between the two characters, as players find it very satisfying.
Lightning and Fang make up the requisite Girl Power duo on this list. These two warrior women have a great rapport and many of us would far prefer seeing them together over Fang and the highly annoying Vanille. Plus, nothing beats a battle party starring Lightning and Fang. With the right setup and timing, Fang launches enemies in the air and the two women juggle them around with powerful attacks, killing them before they have the chance to hit the ground again. Kick ass.
Everyone who has played Dragon Age II knows that there are several possible Hawke personalities, and that Snarky Hawke is the best Hawke. Whether your Hawke is a lad or a lady, saucy pirate Isabella is the perfect partner for getting into and out of all sorts of shady business while having a rollicking good time. Isabella also stars in a love scene accompanied by pirate music, making her one of the most fun, least cheesy romances BioWare has ever developed. Dragon Age II fans can also note that Varric and Bianca are a close second for the game's most kickass couple.
We've kept away from most "male main character, female support companion" teams because the lady in question doesn't tend to kick much ass. Farah's an exception here, being a powerful woman with a mind of her own and a good shot with the bow as well. This couple has weathered multiple betrayals and quite a bit of timeline tomfoolery. Both of them have their own strengths and weaknesses that they help each other overcome, assisting and rescuing each other multiple times throughout the trilogy. We'd like to think that they eventually find a way to break free from the Sands of Time cycle and make a future with each other.
