Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is a 1997 space combat game developed by Totally Games and published by LucasArts. Due to the depth of its mechanics, the game was released exclusively for PC, with the restrictions of a controller not fully allowing the game to flourish in a console environment.

As the third iteration of the X-Wing series, gamers and critics alike knew what they were getting with this title. The result is a critically acclaimed space combat game that was years ahead of its time. While sales figures for the game were never officially released, it’s safe to say that a Star Wars game released with the hype of the upcoming prequels would practically print money.

In Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, you take charge of some of Star Wars‘ most recognizable starships, as you prove yourself in space combat across the galaxy. The game is played entirely from a first-person perspective, so you’ve got to keep your wits about you if you want to outsmart some of the best pilots in the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire.

Even today, the game requires the use of a joystick – it won’t launch without one. This only increases the level of skill required to play the game, with its 3D interface allowing you to lock onto your opponents throughout battle.

Upon release, Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was extremely controversial for one major reason. While it brings together the best elements of the previous titles in the series, it does so in a multiplayer environment. The single-player exists, but it isn’t as extensive as with previous games. However, the multiplayer offerings are strong, with all of free-for-all, vs., and cooperative game modes available.

The controversy was so strong that an expansion pack titled Balance of Power was released, bringing two single-player campaigns into the game exploring the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. This expansion made the game one of the best space combat games ever made.

In terms of good old-fashioned cheat codes, Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter just doesn’t have them. With the game being almost exclusively online, it makes it far more difficult to include cheats in a way that doesn’t unfairly advantage those who choose to use them.

Instead, we can walk you through one of the game’s biggest exploits. If you’re fighting on the Rebel Alliance side, it’s actually incredibly easy to destroy a Star Destroyer from the inside. To do this, destroy the warhead launcher on its nose. From here, you’ll be able to fly inside the Star Destroyer and blow it up without worrying about enemy starfighters. This is a glitch resulting from the models in the game being entirely hollow, and this particular model having a small issue with collision.

Unfortunately not. You may expect them to be added with the modern Steam releases, but that was never the case here.

Why Are There No Cheat Codes in Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter?

We’re almost certain that the lack of cheat codes in Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter comes down to it being a primarily multiplayer title at launch. Because of this, it wouldn’t be fair to allow players to use cheats and it would have the potential to ruin the game entirely.

Even the Balance of Power expansion didn’t add cheats. At that point, it likely wasn’t worth the resources.
