Star Wars: X-Wing is a 1993 space combat simulator developed by Totally Games and published by LucasArts, released on both DOS and PC.

Star Wars: X-Wing features a variety of mission types, changing the pace of the gameplay frequently. Some missions include dogfights against Imperial TIE Fighters, while others see you attack entire capital ships or escort important individuals safely. This is done through ‘tours of duty,’ entire sections of the game dedicated to different missions in the Galactic Civil War.

As for the gameplay itself, you can choose between a few different Rebel Alliance starfighters including the X-Wing, Y-Wing, and A-Wing. Each have their own unique traits that make them a fresh experience to fly. Depth is key to Star Wars: X-Wing, with emphasis given to resource management mid-flight and commanding your fellow wingmen while choosing the right weapons for any given situation. This, combined with the intensity brought by the classic Star Wars soundtrack makes combat feel like you’re taking part in the battles straight from the movies.

Unlike games such as Star Wars: Rebel Assault which take an alternate timeline approach, Star Wars: X-Wing allows players to take part in some of the biggest battles in the Galactic Civil War, just as they happened in the movies.

  • Keyan Farlander: Keyan Farlander is a pilot for the Rebel Alliance and the main character of Star Wars: X-Wing. Farlander is a force-sensitive indiviudal who fights in many of the most important battles of the Galactic Civil War.
  • Luke Skywalker: Legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker is a hero of the Rebel Alliance. In this game, he serves as a playable character in some of the Death Star-based missions.
  • Admiral Ackbar: Ackbar appears throughout the game as a Rebel Alliance Admiral, planning out missions against the Galactic Empire.

Let’s be honest. From its inception to the present day, Star Wars is an IP that has always printed money. Because of this, we have numerous video games based on the franchise, covering any and all elements ever covered in the films and beyond.

Star Wars: X-Wing is no different. This series of games covers the dogfighting element, putting you in charge of Rebel Alliance starfighters and giving you the chance to take on the Galactic Empire in space. It fulfills a huge part of the Star Wars fantasy, which is why the game proved so popular among fans.

Star Wars games released between 1983 and 1999 have another purpose. With the hiatus between the original and prequel trilogies, the video games were a huge part of keeping the franchise relevant among audiences. Games of X-Wing‘s quality certainly went a long way in making sure that was the case.
