Grand Theft Auto V is a 2013 open-world game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. When it was initially released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it was an instant megahit, with over $1 billion in sales across its first three days. Later releases on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S have seen Grand Theft Auto V become the most successful entertainment product ever made, sitting at $6 billion in lifetime sales. Between its legendary single-player mode and incredibly popular online multiplayer, there’s no doubt that the game remains one of the most influential titles of all time.
Grand Theft Auto V Premise
Grand Theft Auto V takes the series’ traditional formula and turns it up a notch. Players return to the sprawling open-world sandbox of Los Santos, making its return from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Most players drive around in a stolen car, breaking every law possible before getting involved in high-octane police chases across the city. However, Grand Theft Auto V also offers a massive amount of side content to participate in, with several side missions and RPG-style content available for players to sink time into. And, as of the 8th generation release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, players can choose to play the game in first or third-person.
Like every other Grand Theft Auto game, GTAV features an engrossing main story that gives the game a real sense of gravitas and heightens the stakes for the main characters. The narrative takes the exaggerated parody humor the series is known for, providing a scathing critique of American society in the 21st Century. It’s clear that the game’s writers (all veteran storytellers at Rockstar Games) had plenty of fun poking holes in the social media-obsessed culture of the 2010s. While some of the references might seem dated by today’s standards, there’s enough that hasn’t changed for Grand Theft Auto V‘s satire to remain relevant today.
The most important new additions to the game are the Heist missions. These pulse-pounding events take place as part of the game’s main story, each advancing the critical path in meaningful ways. Every Heist requires players to choose their crew, perform the set-ups, and execute the plan all while the game allows for multiple paths to victory. The overall success of Heist missions depends on how well players strategize during the planning phase.
Grand Theft Auto V Main Characters
For the first time in the series’ history, Grand Theft Auto V allowed gamers to take charge of not one but three different protagonists, along with the ability to switch between them at almost any time. This added plenty of personality to the large cast, with each protagonist coming from different backgrounds. Main characters in Grand Theft Auto V include:
- Michael: Michael is the first protagonist in Grand Theft Auto V, beginning the game retired from a former life of crime with a brand-new identity, presumed dead. His past finally catches up to him, and he is forced to come back into the profession after a string of bad decisions leaves him in a stack of debt with some extremely dangerous individuals.
- Trevor: Trevor is the second protagonist in Grand Theft Auto V. A former friend of Michael’s, Trevor has been spending his years lying low in Blaine County. His key traits are his recklessness and his aggression, which dominate pretty much every scene he appears in. Trevor joins Michael when he discovers his old friend is still alive after almost a decade of hiding.
- Franklin: Franklin is the final protagonist of Grand Theft Auto V. He starts the game as a small-time gangster, living a life of petty crime. Despite this, he has abilities beyond his current status, the potential of which is noticed by Michael. He becomes involved with Michael’s higher-risk-higher-reward criminal lifestyle, which sees his reputation increase as the game progresses.
- Devin Weston: Devin is the overarching antagonist of Grand Theft Auto V, although this only becomes apparent in the game’s third act. He’s a billionaire who initially provides you with jobs to do before his true colors are eventually revealed.
Games in the Grand Theft Auto Series
Grand Theft Auto remains one of the most popular series in all of gaming, with its specific flavor of free-roam chaos resonating with both casual and hardcore gamers. Despite its enduring popularity, it’s no secret that Rockstar takes its time with the games, only releasing them once they’re fully ready. And with the popularity of Grand Theft Auto V‘s online mode, Rockstar continues to get plenty of life from the latest game in the series ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Games in the Grand Theft Auto series include:
- Grand Theft Auto (1997)
- Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999)
- Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)

GTAV Cheat Code FAQs
Does Using Cheats Disable Achievements in Grand Theft Auto V?
Yes, unfortunately, using cheats does disable achievements and trophies in Grand Theft Auto V. However, this only disables them for your current session, so you don’t have to worry if you want to still get achievements further down the line.
If you’re a completionist, there’s another thing to be aware of. Enabling and using achievements will disable 100% completion for that mission, so you should beware when using them during the story.
If you’re still concerned about using cheats and getting achievements, you can also make a separate save file to play with cheats where you can mess about without risk.
Do These Cheats Work in Grand Theft Auto Online?
There’s no way that you can alter the gameplay in Grand Theft Auto Online, so that rules out many of the available cheat codes. In terms of money and vehicles, the in-game economy is crucial to Grand Theft Auto Online, so it wouldn’t make sense to allow players to change that at will. When so much of the game revolves around microtransactions, ultimately it would be a huge surprise if cheat codes were allowed.
All of this doesn’t stop the thousands of players who instead decide to use hacks in Grand Theft Auto Online, but we wouldn’t recommend this route as it almost certainly leads to a permanent ban for your account.
Is There An Infinite Money Cheat For Grand Theft Auto V?
Unlike previous iterations of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, Grand Theft Auto V doesn’t have any kind of infinite money cheat to use that would allow you to get free cash in Los Santos.
For console players, the fastest way to make money is to manipulate the stock market via assassination missions. But for PC, there’s another solution.
On PC you can use a trainer to change plenty about the game, including your money situation. The most popular of all is Simple Trainer. It’s an extremely powerful tool once you get to grips with its daunting UI.
