Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is the Grand Theft Auto III spin-off for the PSP handheld. Released for the PlayStation Portable in 2005, the game eventually was ported to the PlayStation 2. The title also received mobile ports in 2015 and 2016. Liberty City Stories is officially the 9th game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Additionally, it is the first full 3D entry for portable devices.
As a prequel to Grand Theft Auto III, Liberty City Stories features the same version of Liberty City used in the 2001 PS2 classic. The PSP version of Liberty City Stories features an online multiplayer mode — a first for the series. The title would go on to spawn a sequel in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, serving as a prequel to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Liberty City Stories earned positive reviews upon release, with many praising the title for its ability to translate the Grand Theft Auto III experience to handhelds. As of March 2008, the title had sold over 8 million units, making it the best-selling PSP game by a large margin. At least 1 million of those sales are attributed to the PS2 version, causing Rockstar to also port Vice City Stories to the PS2.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories Premise
Liberty City Stories takes place 3 years before the events of Grand Theft Auto III and sees players assuming the role of Toni Cipriani. Toni is returning to Liberty City following a forced exile due to his murdering of a made man. His boss, Don Salvatore, welcomes Toni back and immediately sets him to work in Liberty City’s organized crime underground.
Due to the game taking place before the events of Grand Theft Auto III, several of the areas of Liberty City are notably different. Still, the game uses a very similar city model to the world of Liberty City from Grand Theft Auto III. Liberty City Stories has the benefit of being developed with advanced technology used in Grand Theft Auto III‘s sequels, adding indoor environments and motorcycles not originally available in GTAIII.
The game is an action-adventure title that uses a third-person perspective and takes place in an open world. The gameplay is largely very similar to the other 3D Grand Theft Auto games. Players begin as a low-ranking criminal and work their way up the underworld ladder by completing missions and earning notoriety. As players complete missions, they are rewarded with money that can be used to buy cars, clothes, and weapons. Additionally, completing missions opens up new connections that advance the story and create new opportunities for subsequent missions and other side activities.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories Main Characters
Since the game is a prequel, many of the important characters from Grand Theft Auto III make a return in Liberty City Stories. The main character Toni Cipriani is one of the protagonist’s main contacts and mission providers in the first part of Grand Theft Auto III, and players will encounter plenty of other familiar faces during their playthrough. The main characters of Liberty City Stories include:
- Toni Cipriani: Toni is a member of the Leone crime family returning to Liberty City after 4 years. He is loyal to Salvatore Leone but also wants to impress his overbearing mother by becoming a higher-ranking mobster.
- Ned Burner: Ned Burner is a reporter for the Liberty Tree newspaper. He has Toni do various jobs to help generate news worthy of headlines.
- Franco Forelli: Franco Forelli is the don of the Forelli crime family who enlists the help of Toni. He’s being pressured by the Sicilian Mafia to start a war with the Sindacco family.
- Don Salvatore Leone: Salvatore Leone is the don of the Leone crime family and Toni’s boss. He welcomes Toni back into the family after his 4-year hiatus.
- Vincenzo “Lucky” Cilli: Cilli is the lieutenant tasked with Toni’s guidance by Salvatore Leone. He despises Toni and actively works to try and sabotage his success.
- Mrs. Cipriani: Mrs. Cipriani is Toni’s overbearing mother. She frequently expresses disappointment in her son for being a low-ranking mobster and admonishes him.
- Massimo Torini: Massimo is the antagonist of Liberty City Stories and a high-ranking member of the Sicilian Mafia. He sets up alliances with Liberty City’s rival gangs to take down uncooperative Mafia families.
