May 13, 2008 - This fall comes the potential fall of America after the Cold War heats to the boiling point in a "what if" scenario.

World in Conflict: Soviet Assault is essentially a real-time strategy game, but with such a defined focus on action, it's best categorized as a hybrid game. Here we see a classic PC game being adapted for the next gen consoles. The inclusion of action shouldn't be interpreted as "dumbed down," just more revved up. The ability to include PC-quality graphics and gameplay depth will bring the RTS genre to a whole new audience.

It's the late 80s, and the Soviets know their days as a communist state are numbered. In a last ditch effort to exert their power and influence on the world they decide to invade Europe. And while NATO forces are being assembled, America discovers Soviet invaders on its doorsteps. Having never weathered the threat of occupation, America is shocked to have to fight for its very survival on its own turf. World in Conflict: Soviet Assault will literally bring the next World War to your hometown.

Soviet Assault is not what you would call an expansion pack. It does expand on the original World in Conflict, but does so by adding new missions to it. Soviet Assault is a complete stand-alone game. Everything is included. You don't a copy of the original. What is different is that in this version you'll be able to play from the perspective of the Soviets in a special Soviet campaign. As the field commander in this real-time strategy game, you will have the latest and greatest weapons at your command, but more importantly, you will have control of some of the best-trained armies in the world.

Combining strategy and action is the hallmark of World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. When the gameplay begins, the action is relentless. Players won't have to worry about constructing bases and gathering resources. Although some players may complain that this will ultimately mean a lack of depth, these and other elements are included in the gameplay and must be taken into consideration. They can be monitored by the onscreen display. There is still a lot of strategy to employ when you consider that ammo, weapons, vehicles, and soldiers are not unlimited.

The console versions, including the X360 and the PS3, will include a new control system that is different from the PC version. The game will employ a first-person shooter perspective, enabling the player to keep their eyes on the battlefield and not have to continually consult the map. A HUD will give you all the relevant information you need while keeping your enemy in sight. The camera is moveable, giving players a 360-degree view of their surroundings, just as they would in a real-world situation. No static, isometric perspective in this game. Moving the cursor around the battlefield, you will be able to target enemy units and determine immediately if you have enough firepower to destroy them. This, and the fact that the 3D battlefield is destructible, adds an element of instant gratification to an RTS game.

Developers Massive have devised a few new ways to command and deploy troops other than pointing and clicking at them as you would in a PC game. To select a large number of units on the field, simply click the stick to create a circle. You can now command all units within that circle. Clicking the stick again will double the circle in size. It's a quick and effective way to manage troops. For more precision, a menu system can be employed that will let you select from various units and place them into companies. This is all controlled by the D-pad, which you push up or down to make the appropriate selection. Commands for these companies are facilitated by a radial menu. This will give players a degree of control similar to that in a PC game.

World in Conflict: Soviet Assault can be played in single-player or multiplayer mode, which will accommodate up to 16 players in head-to-head or team-based combat. Players can choose from units such as Infantry, Armor, Support or Air. The game will feature PC-quality graphics and animations, with an emphasis on grand explosions - and let's not forget blood, which earns the game a T rating.
