80 Percent Of Players Will Never Beat Hitman: Absolution

None

According to Hitman: Absolution director Tore Blystad, only about twenty percent of players will ever see the final level of Hitman: Absolution. This isn’t just a hunch; this is what their calculated metrics tell them. And it isn’t just Hitman that players won’t finish. According to Blystad, only twenty percent of the gaming population completes any game.

So what does this mean for game development? Well, with the knowledge that only twenty percent of gamers will ever finish a game, it becomes wise for developers to look at any game as an ongoing experience. By assuming that the player will put the game down at some point, they can develop reasons to make them pick it back up. In addition, if going back to previous levels and replaying them remains fun, they can capture a certain portion of their audience who puts down a game and then decides to start it over from scratch.

By thinking of games that stick around for months, even years without being beaten, developers could craft a game to have new kinds of replay value. They could even include bonuses in your sequels for completing the original game, once again giving people incentive to come back and play.
