Originally released for the PlayStation in 1996, Alien Trilogy is a first-person shooter from Probe Entertainment that loosely follows the events of the first three Alien films. Players take on the role of Ellen Ripley as she makes her way across 30 stages that pull inspiration from Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), and David Fincher’s Alien 3 (1992). While the game was originally a PlayStation title, it would later be ported to both MS-DOS and the Sega Saturn. The title is similar to Probe Entertainment’s Die Hard Trilogy (both developed in conjunction with 20th Century Fox). However, unlike Die Hard Trilogy (which adopts a different gameplay style for each film), Alien Trilogy is solely a first-person shooter title.
The game would end up being both a critical and commercial success, acting as one of the first console Alien games to receive strong review scores for its gameplay. The title is one of several games from 1996 (along with Resident Evil) responsible for popularizing the elements of the survival horror genre. The Sega Saturn and PC ports would also receive strong praise, with Alien Trilogy remaining a cult classic among fans of 5th-generation gaming. In PAL regions (specifically, the UK), Alien Trilogy would end up being one of the best-selling PS1 titles during the month of its release.
Alien Trilogy Premise
The premise of Alien Trilogy is similar to Probe Entertainment’s Die Hard Trilogy in that the game loosely adapts the events of three films into a video game format. However, where Die Hard Trilogy utilizes three different gameplay styles for each of the three films it adapts, Alien Trilogy sticks to the FPS format for all three films, placing players in the role of series protagonist Ellen Ripley. Along with the Xenomorph aliens that are the films’ titular focus, players will also battle synthetic humans (androids) and other non-alien threats across the game’s 30 levels.
In addition to the weaponry seen from across the films (including the Colonial Marines’ iconic Pulse Rifle and the flamethrower from the original Alien), players also have a shoulder lamp for dark, tense sections. These portions of the gameplay are slower-paced and more methodical than many other first-person shooters of the era, marking Alien Trilogy as one of the earliest titles to blend survival horror elements with first-person gameplay. Many of the ideas that make Alien Trilogy such a success on the PS1 would later be revised in the excellent Alien: Isolation from 2014.
Alien Trilogy Main Characters
Although the game takes place during the events of the first three mainline Alien films, players do not actually get to see the player character since Alien Trilogy is a first-person shooter. However, the game loosely adapts the events of the films into standard FPS levels, with players assuming the role of the franchise’s main heroine: Ellen Ripley. A former Weiland Yutani salvage crew member, Ripley and her shipmates inadvertently stumble upon the nest of an undiscovered alien species, which would later become known as the Xenomorph. Considered the ultimate predator, Xenomorphs are formidable aliens who use humans as hosts and are nigh-indestructible. Main characters in Alien Trilogy include:
- Ellen Ripley: The protagonist of the Alien films and the main player character in Alien Trilogy, Ellen Ripley is a former salvage crew member who barely escapes with her life following an encounter with the Xenomorph. After spending decades in cryo-stasis, she is called on to help exterminate the Xenomorph threat once and for all.
- Burke: A Weiland Yutani corporate representative who pulls Ripley out of stasis and convinces her to revisit LV-426. He secretly is conspiring to obtain biological samples of the Xenomorph to sell as a biological weapon.
- Hicks: Corporal Hicks is the last surviving member of a platoon of Colonial Marines tasked with helping Ripley explore LV-426. His heroism allows Ripley and Newt to escape the colony.
- Xenomorph: The titular aliens at the forefront of the Alien films and other media, the Xenomorph are the joint creation between screenwriter Dan O’Bannon and surrealist artist HR Geiger. They are ultimate predators with nigh-indestructible skin and acid for blood that use humans as hosts to reproduce.
Games in the Alien Franchise
The release of Ridley Scott’s original Alien film coincides with the rise of video games as a popular medium. It follows, then, that the Alien franchise has games dating all the way back to the Atari 2600 and continues to find success on modern platforms as an IP that seems to fit perfectly within the confines of the video game medium. Throughout the last 40-plus years there have been a wide variety of games utilizing the Alien IP, with each of them varying in quality. While some are bonafide classics that act as essential companion pieces to the films, others are less-than-stellar cash-grabs looking to capitalize on the popularity of the Alien series. Games utilizing the Alien license include:
- Alien (Atari 2600, 1982)
- Aliens: The Computer Game (Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, 1986)
- Aliens: Alien 2 (MSX, 1987)
- Aliens (Arcade, 1990)
- Alien 3 (NES, SNES, Genesis, 1993)

- Aliens: Colonial Marines (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, 2013)
- Alien: Isolation (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, 2014)
- Aliens: Fireteam Elite (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, 2021)

Alien Trilogy Cheat FAQs
How many levels are there in Alien Trilogy?
There are a total of 30 unique levels in Alien Trilogy, with the levels spread out among the stories of the initial trilogy of Alien films: 1979’s Alien, 1986’s Aliens, and 1992’s Alien 3. In addition to the 30 main levels, there are also 3 “boss levels” where players fight the Xenomorph queen.
Who are the enemies in Alien Trilogy?
In addition to the standard iconic Xenomorph aliens of the Alien films, players will fight plenty of other enemies in Alien Trilogy. These include foes such as synthetic humans, Weiland Yutani grunts, and other non-alien enemies.
What type of game is Alien Trilogy?
Probe Entertainment’s Alien Trilogy is a fairly standard first-person shooter that takes place in the universe from the Alien films. The game is separated into three sections, each of which corresponds to one of the (at the time) three main films in the Alien series.
How long to beat Alien Trilogy?
Playing through Alien Trilogy will take most players roughly 7-8 hours, making it typical among first-person shooters in terms of length. While there are additional difficulty modes to challenge yourself with, the core experience remains the same and does not unlock any additional rewards. As such, a standard playthrough counts for 100%, meaning the same 7-8 hours still applies.
