A Starry Fallout

Developer: Bethesda Softworks | Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Release Date: July 2010 | System/s: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Roaming the dangerous, irradiated wastes of a post-apocalyptic Washington, D.C. and the mutant-infested realm beyond in Fallout 3 may have temporarily satiated the Mad Max-inspired desires of many hardcore Fallout fans, but the masses are already anxious for more juicy content. Pleased with the success of its reboot of the old-school franchise, Bethesda Softworks is now planning a full-fledged follow up – only this time the cataclysmic nuclear destruction will hit the glitzy and glamorous streets of Hollywood.

Bethesda is already hard-at-work on Fallout 4 and plans to take the next entry in the series in a bit of a different direction from what fans experienced last year. Wiping the slate clean, the fourth proper Fallout title will take place in a present-day Los Angeles that’s been completely decimated in the aftermath of a recent nuclear war. Finally crawling out from a high-tech fallout shelter several years after the bombs dropped, players will find themselves scavenging through the debris-strewn Hollywood, fighting off roving bands of mutants, making contact with pockets of civilization, and attempting to survive using limited resources. While the many elements of the game will be familiar to Fallout 3 fans, the game completely eschews the 1950s style in favor of more modern accoutrements. This change in tone is also reflected in the game’s soundtrack, which will be packed with current top 40 pop dance hits that can be picked up and streamed with the Pip-Boy 2000.

April Fool's 09 - Fallout 4

Going with the Hollywood setting, the development team has reportedly incorporated a certain measure of influence and inspiration gleaned from infamous video game film adaptation director Uwe Boll (Postal, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne II: Deliverance), who will also make a guest appearance in the game as a delusional, mutated raving lunatic seeking to create a new film about the apocalypse that has just befallen the world. Additionally, Fallout 4 will feature a star-studded cast of in-game film personalities, including Seth Rogan (Fanboys, Zack and Miri Make a Porno), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction), David Hasselhoff (Baywatch, Knight Rider, America’s Got Talent), and many more.

While many of the details are still being worked out, one officially confirmed new feature includes a movie-capturing and editing program worked into the VATS game mechanic. You’ll be able to record VATS combat sequences filled with exploding heads and dismembered limbs flying in all directions and splice these grim scenes together using a robust editing program. These gory movie clips can be set to pop hits from the in-game music selection and uploaded to share with friends. Indeed, Fallout 4 is shaping up to be a Fallout experience unlike any other.
