Persona 5 isn’t all sunshine, rainbows, and existential teenage angst. There’s some drama brewing over at Atlus USA. Specifically, there are complications regarding streaming the game, largely at what seems like the behest of Atlus Japan, the developer.
Citing being wary of spoilers, Atlus has some pretty strict rules regarding streaming Persona 5 content. Let’s Play folks, for example, are pretty much screwed. Video reviews are also touched on, with some text that also applies to written reviews. People are to avoid specific story details, use broad strokes when describing situations, and so on and so forth. The video content guidelines are very specific, starting with a hard limit on the in-game date of 7/7. You can’t record past that in-game date. This also extends to time limits on individual videos, as well as hard limits on showing boss fights past the first one.
Atlus ends the warning post implying these restrictions are coming down from on high, meaning the Japanese branch of Atlus is not so thrilled about streaming as a “thing.” Atlus says any Persona 5 streams featuring footage from after the in-game cut-off date will be subject to content ID claims and possibly even channel strikes and account suspensions. The line has been drawn in the sand.
This is a pretty gross example of a corporate body being out of touch with the entire rest of the world outside of itself. We don’t see this sort of thing much with western developers, most of whom are keen on streaming and the positive business effects for everyone involved. Japanese devs seem historically much more reserved, and here’s a prime example.
