Beware The Not-So-Humble

Beware The Not-So-Humble

None

As with most wonderful things in life, it only takes a few bad eggs with rotten attitudes to spoil everyone else’s fun. In this case, the repercussions aren’t especially severe, but the impetus for them is downright trashy.

As we mentioned yesterday, the fourth Humble Indie Bundle is live . It includes a lot of great stuff and lets you pay what you want for it, all the way down to a single penny.

Some less-than-scrupulous individuals, however, have been taking advantage of that one-penny minimum and the Steam codes the bundle provides. They’ve been tying the extra codes to dummy Steam accounts, using those to get extra entries into Valve’s holiday raffle (part of the company’s ongoing winter sale).

In response, the bundle has been reconfigured so that only those who pay more than a dollar are offered Steam codes for their games. Everyone who pays less will still get the bundle, but won’t be able to use the games as a means of abusing Steam’s contest system.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this situation, though, is that the Humble Bundle’s blog is asking for user input on whether this is a good way to deal with the problem, or if consumers have better solutions. Further, they are willing to work something out with individuals who really can’t afford to pay more than a dollar on a case-by-case basis.
