Blockbuster Spying Deal with Sony?

Blockbuster Spying Deal with Sony?

None

According to a statement made by Jim Keyes, Chairman and CEO of Blockbuster, the company is actively seeking strategic partners to promote their re-launched download service now known as Blockbuster OnDemand.

The service sports about 10,000 titles and is available for Blockbuster consumers regardless of whether or not they participate in the movies-by-mail program.

Companies being pursued include various electronics manufacturers. One of those may be Sony. Insiders speculate that a Blockbuster supported download service through Sony’s Blu-ray players as well as PS3 may in fact be in the works.

Here’s what Mr. Keyes had to say on the subject:

“The service is essentially a rebranding and expansion of Blockbuster’s Movielink.com Web site, which offers about 10,000 on-demand movies for download to personal computers. About 2,000 of those titles, such as recent DVD releases “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, “Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2” and “Get Smart”, can be downloaded to TVs via Blockbuster OnDemand. Blockbuster also is pursuing deals to package the new service with Blu-ray players and is considering alliances with video game console makers, but is not ready to disclose the details.”
