Capcom Dashes MvC3 DLC Hopes

Capcom Dashes MvC3 DLC Hopes

None

When Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was announced yesterday, one question immediately came to mind: Will Capcom offer a downloadable update to MvC3 that upgrades it to the Ultimate version, a la Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition? Would gamers who’d purchased and enjoyed the initial MvC3 release be able to pay a reduced fee—maybe $15—and be rewarded for their loyalty to the brand?

According to Capcom, the answer is “no.” Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will not be available as a download for the original title. It will be sold exclusively as a $40 retail product. On the one hand, with the amount of new content being jammed into this release, that’s not entirely surprising. Twelve new characters, eight new stages, and an overhaul to the online system.

On the other, though, this is incredibly disappointing. The people most interested in experiencing new MvC3 content are going to be those who’ve already played the game, loved it, and want to experience more with extra variation. Those people will have paid as much as $60 for the game, and possibly purchased the DLC as well. With the release of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, they will have invested over $100 on just the game component of one fighting game. Isn’t that a tad bit excessive?
