Indie survival horror game Conscript is the debut title from solo developer Jordan Mochi (developed under his independent studio Catchweight Games) and published by Team 17. Players would initially get their chance to experience a demo of Conscript roughly 2 years into its development as part of the Fall 2022 Steam Next Fest. Positive reception from the demo would help Mochi land a publisher for Conscript in the form of Team 17, with the title eventually getting an official release date of July 23, 2024. In addition to releasing on PC via Steam, Conscript is available for PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
Thanks to its unique World War I setting and distinctive PS1 era visuals and gameplay, Conscript is one of many highly-praised retro survival horror games, often compared to 2022’s excellent Signalis in its ability to successfully channel the genre’s greats such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Despite some strong critical praise, the game’s creator has noted that Conscript‘s commercial performance is somewhat middling, calling plans for potential DLC into question.
Conscript Premise
Taking place during the most infamous and bloody battle of World War I, Conscript is a game set around the Battle of Verdun that tells a deeply personal story of two brothers conscripted to fight for their native France. When the younger of the two is injured and goes missing, the older brother vows to venture behind enemy lines and rescue his sibling at any cost. A survival horror game in every sense of the term, Conscript lays bare the very real horrors of the First World War and challenges players to do the one thing millions were unsuccessful at — surviving.
In terms of its gameplay, Conscript borrows heavily from the template established by the first Resident Evil. Players control young French infantryman André from a third-person perspective, navigating the maze-like trenches and forts of the front lines and fighting off soldiers. Unlike many other survival horror games, there are no supernatural threats in Conscript. Instead, the “horror” comes from the sheer relentless brutality of the war and the psychological effect it has on both ally and enemy. Combat consists of aiming a variety of weapons and waiting for the reticle to shrink to indicate a more accurate shot, and players have evasive maneuvers they can use to dodge roll out of the way of enemy fire and melee attacks.
In addition to the game’s heavy combat focus, Conscript features several puzzles reminiscent of other games in the survival horror genre. These require the player to collect items, manage a limited inventory, and use clues to devise solutions. Notably, Conscript presents its signature “old-school”-style survival horror gameplay in a fittingly atmospheric PS1-style aesthetic.
Conscript Main Characters
The story of Conscript places players directly in the shoes of French soldier André Poilu during the infamous Battle of Verdun. With dwindling supplies and equally low morale, André and his fellow infantrymen must make a final stand at Fort Souville while also not giving in to the horrors that surround them on all sides, from starvation and exposure to shellshock, madness, and desertion. Above all else, though, André’s main goal is simple — find and protect his younger brother Pierre. When Pierre goes missing at the outset of Conscript’s adventure, André’s focus shifts to needing to balance his familial obligations with his sworn duty to his country. The main characters in Conscript include:
- André: André is the de facto patriarch of his family following his father’s death and a hero to his younger brother Pierre. He promises to keep Pierre safe while the two are fighting on the front lines, leading to his singular focus to rescue his younger brother from the jaws of the German advance.
- Pierre: André’s younger brother and the youngest surviving member of his family. Pierre is an aspiring artist who signs up to fight in World War I along with his brother. He is injured and goes missing at the beginning of Conscript.
Other Games Set During World War I
The setting of Conscript is one of the main contributors to the title’s tension and horror, with World War I providing the perfect backdrop of violence and an oppressive atmosphere perfect for a survival horror game. Naturally, Conscript is far from the only game set during the First World War. In fact, it’s not even the only survival horror game with a World War I setting. Though games set during real-world conflict tend to favor World War II, there are plenty of titles set during World War I that do a great job showcasing how pivotal an event in human history the conflict was. Some of the better games with a World War I setting include:
- Victoria II (Grand Strategy, 2010)
- Toy Soldiers (Strategy, Tower Defense, 2010)
- Valiant Hearts: The Great War (Adventure, Narrative, 2014)
- Verdun (Tactical Shooter, 2015)
- Battlefield 1 (FPS, 2016)
- Isonzo (Tactical Shooter, 2022)
- Amnesia: The Bunker (Survival Horror, 2023)
- Conscript (Survival Horror, 2024)
Conscript Cheats & Secrets
While there are no official “Cheats” for Conscript, there are several secrets. In addition to the ability to unlock infinite ammo for subsequent playthroughs, there are 4 unlockable endings. Further, there are several secret and missable items players can acquire during Conscript‘s 6 Chapters. Those playing Conscript on PC do have the ability to apply cheats using a third-party cheat engine.
Conscript Endings & Unlockables
There are 4 total endings in Conscript, each of which players will unlock depending on their actions during the game. There is a corresponding achievement/trophy for each ending as well. Additionally, other than the secret 4th ending, the 3 main endings each have an alternate story branch. These are referred to as the “A” and “B” versions of each ending.
The only true unlockable in Conscript is infinite ammo, which players will earn by fully upgrading every weapon in the game. To do this, players will need to find many Gun Parts and not miss any of the collectible firearms available in Conscript. It’s likely that players will need more than a single playthrough to earn this unlock.
Factors that Impact the Ending
Players’ actions during the game can significantly impact the ending they receive. Each of the following events will affect Conscript‘s ending:
- Choosing to Fight or Escape battles: Before decisive battles, players can choose to abandon their post. Choosing to stay and fight or escape and hide will affect whether players receive ending 1, 2, or 3. The battles in question are:
- Chapter 1: Front Line
- Chapter 2: Fort Souville
- Chapter 4: No Man’s Land
- Chapter 6: The Mantle
- Finding & Releasing the Carrier Pigeon: There is a carrier pigeon in Chapter 6 located within Fort Vaux that players can find and release. To open the pigeon’s cage, players will need to locate three “Pronged” keys throughout Conscript‘s campaign. The keys’ locations are:
- Chapter 2: Support Trench — Trench Communication
- Chapter 6: Fort Vaux — Emergency Surgery
- Chapter 6: Fort Vaux (GF) — Infirmary
- Locating Andre & Pierre’s Father’s Watch: The pocket watch that is referenced throughout Conscript is retrievable during Chapter 6. By reading Pierre’s journal during each end-of-chapter flashback, players will get the solution to unlock the booth in Fort Vaux — Weapon Storage. Opening the booth will grant Pierre’s portfolio, which Andre can open with another password from the Chapter 5 flashback. Make sure to have the pocketwatch in Andre’s inventory before the final battle.

Conscript Puzzle Solutions
Use the following codes/solutions if you get stuck during Conscript.
Chapter 1 – Escape
After the battle at the Front Lines, Andre will need to head back toward the Support Trench. Along the way, you’ll notice there’s a locked door with a 4-digit combination in the Front Lines area. This code will change every playthrough, but there is a solution to figure out the correct order. Before heading back into Fort Souville, check the nearby doors. Two doors will have 2-digit codes outside marked with a yellow sign. Combine these numbers to determine the 4-digit combination.
Chapter 2 – Fort Souville (Underground)
The door to the Latrines in the underground section of Fort Souville has a combination lock on the outside. Right next to the door is a hint that the solution is “A, B, D, C“. Note that this will change every time you play the game. The lock itself features 5 different images Andre can cycle through. To determine which image corresponds to which letter, you will need to visit the different Casemate locations, each of which has a name corresponding to the letters A, B, C, and D.
- A: Soldier’s Face
- B: Lion
- C: Iron Cross
- D: Sword
Chapter 3 — The Road (Camp)
The section of The Road map marked “Camp” contains a locked door with a 4-digit combination lock. The code to enter this door can be found on a piece of paper clutched by a fallen soldier further south on The Road. The correct combination is 6021.
Chapter 5 — The Town (Familial House)
One of the houses in Chapter 5 has a door with a 4-digit combination lock. Nearby is a diary from the homeowner with a hint about the combination’s solution involving her children’s features. It’s a fairly easy solution to suss out, but to save time the correct digits are 3124.
Chapter 5 — The Town (Gun Store)
The Gun Store in The Town also has a door with a 4-digit combination lock. Players should get the code from the cemetery in the first half of Chapter 5, which is 1899.
Chapter 5 — The Town (Church Gate)
The four slots in the Church Gate are home to the different Slates Andre finds throughout the Town. The order in which Andre places them in the gate is important, though. If the Slates are in an incorrect order, the gate will not open. Use the symbols on the ground in the different sections of the town to determine where to place the Slates. Note that the symbols may differ from one playthrough to the next.
- Outskirts: Bottom-Right
- Residential Area: Bottom-Left
- District: Top-Right

Conscript Cheat FAQs
Does Conscript have infinite ammo?
Yes, though infinite ammo in Conscript is an unlockable and not a cheat (unless using a cheat engine). To unlock infinite ammo, players will need to find and fully upgrade every weapon in the game. Note that some weapons are missable and it will likely take more than one playthrough to find enough gun parts to fully upgrade every weapon in Conscript.
Is Conscript scary?
Though it’s a survival horror game, Conscript has no real supernatural or fantastic elements. Instead, the game derives much of its horror from the psychological stress and tension of fighting through the horrific First World War. Conscript is more of a psychological horror game that wears down the player and causes them to feel uneasy. That said, there are some jump scares that will shock players as well as some tense situations where enemies will surprise you and cause a “fight or flight” response.
Is there New Game + in Conscript?
Similar to some of the later entries in the Resident Evil series, Conscript does feature the ability to start a new game from a Game Clear save file. What carries over are primarily any upgrades that players have for their weapons to help with unlocking infinite ammo. Infinite ammo is only unlockable after fully upgrading all weapons.
How long to beat Conscript?
Conscript is actually a bit on the longer side for a survival horror game, especially one from an indie developer. While most early games in the genre (and the indie titles that are influenced by them) tend to run between 5 and 8 hours in length, Conscript‘s 6 chapters take a significant amount of time to complete. On average, a single playthrough of Conscript will take anywhere from 12-15 hours. For those hoping to unlock all achievements and the infinite ammo bonus, expect to spend 18-20 hours.
